Exploring catastrophic climate change scenarios.

Climate

Prudent risk management requires consideration of bad-to-worst-case scenarios. Yet, for climate change, such potential futures are poorly understood. Could anthropogenic climate change result in worldwide societal collapse or even eventual human extinction? At present, this is a dangerously underexplored topic. Yet there are ample reasons to suspect that climate change could result in a global catastrophe.
Analyzing the mechanisms for these extreme consequences could help galvanize action, improve resilience, and inform policy, including emergency responses. We outline current knowledge about the likelihood of extreme climate change, discuss why understanding bad-to-worst cases is vital, articulate reasons for concern about catastrophic outcomes, define key terms, and put forward a research agenda.

The proposed agenda covers four main questions: 1) What is the potential for climate change to drive mass extinction events? 2) What are the mechanisms that could result in human mass mortality and morbidity? 3) What are human societies' vulnerabilities to climate-triggered risk cascades, such as from conflict, political instability, and systemic financial risk? 4) How can these multiple strands of evidence—together with other global dangers—be usefully synthesized into an “integrated catastrophe assessment”? It is time for the scientific community to grapple with the challenge of better understanding catastrophic climate change.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers says Wesley Fofana's protracted move to Chelsea is impacting the "environment and stability" at the club.

Wesley

Bottom-of-the-table Leicester have only signed goalkeeper Alex Smithies so far this summer, while James Maddison and Youri Tielemans have also been linked with moves away from the King Power Stadium.

Belgium midfielder Tielemans is one of several Foxes players whose contracts are due to expire next summer. "This window has been a very challenging one," continued Rodgers. "Players who maybe thought they were moving on are not.

"[Then there's] us hoping to get players in to improve and help - obviously that hasn't been done." The Foxes welcome Manchester United to the King Power Stadium on Thursday looking to record their first Premier League victory of the campaign.

The Red Devils have recovered from a poor start to win their last two league games under new Dutch manager Erik ten Hag. "Erik is adapting to the country and the league, he will understand very quickly that the tempo and intensity will be different from where he's come from," said Rodgers.

"He'll need time to bring in the players he wants and time to put in place his philosophy. In the modern game that can be difficult but I'm sure he'll do very well."

For the first time, science has an example of a very important molecule floating around in a world beyond our solar system.

NASA

Over the past few decades, NASA's space telescopes discovered thousands of new planets located beyond our solar system. But astronomers were forced to wait for the next generation of advanced observatories to get a closer look at these exoplanets to see if they might harbor the building blocks of life.

The space agency's long-awaited James Webb Space Telescope is one such next-gen telescope. And just a few months into its official science operations, it's already delivered the goods by detecting clear evidence of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of an exoplanet for the first time.

"As soon as the data appeared on my screen, the whopping carbon dioxide feature grabbed me," Zafar Rustamkulov, a Johns Hopkins University graduate student and part of the research team, said in a statement. "It was a special moment, crossing an important threshold in exoplanet sciences."

Arsen Zakharyan has been linked with a move to Chelsea this week and there's speculation that the teenage sensation has just bid farewell to Dinamo Moscow.

Chelsea

Arsen Zakharyan has dropped a major hint on his future amid a potential move to Chelsea. The 19-year-old wonderkid has quickly become heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer and it looks as if he's just bid farewell to Dinamo Moscow.

He featured in a three-man midfield for the top-flight Russian side in an away clash with Pari Nizhny Novgorod. The tie ended 2-2 and Zakharyan was replaced with just over 20 minutes remaining.

Upon the final whistle, the Russia international joined his teammates on the pitch to applaud Dinamo Moscow's travelling supporters. While what he did is nothing out of the ordinary, taking his body language into account, Zakharyan looked emotional as he soaked up the atmosphere.

A new round of awards will help university researchers develop ideas for innovative technology to support exploration in the extreme conditions of space .

SPACE

A new round of awards will help university researchers develop ideas for innovative technology to support exploration in the extreme conditions of space – from the Moon to deep space and beyond. The seven selected projects will advance control systems for solar sails, help solar-powered systems survive the Moon's long, cold nights, and explore designs for novel materials that could better endure the wild temperature swings of space.

"Our ambitious goals will take us to some of the most challenging places in the solar system, from the Moon's darkest, coldest areas to the intense temperatures near the Sun," said Dr. Prasun Desai, deputy associate administrator of the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "The work from these university researchers will help create new cutting-edge capabilities for space exploration."

The selections were made under the Early Career Faculty (ECF) opportunity, which awards grants to accredited U.S. universities on behalf of outstanding faculty researchers early in their careers. ECF focuses on driving researchers to explore ideas and approaches that could benefit the future of science, space travel, and exploration.

Each researcher will receive up to $600,000 over three years to advance their technology. The selected proposals fall under three topics covering different technology needs for future exploration.

From shade to high-tech solutions, Spain’s Seville is rolling out measures to mitigate scorching heat.

Europe

Many Spanish kids’ childhood memories of summer are peppered with sweat, long siestas and street games around our grandmothers, who would take their foldable chairs outside as soon as the sun set, spending the coolest hours of the day chatting with neighbors and friends.

The tradition, known in Spanish as charla al fresco or “cool chat,” is so entrenched that last year a village in the southern region of Andalucia sought UNESCO World Heritage status for it. The village’s mayor argued the old habit is in danger because of the widespread use of social media, which encourages people to stare at their phones or computers rather than engage in real life conversations.

This summer’s record-high temperatures show it’s not just social media threatening Europe’s ancient traditions. Scorching heat — even at night— has kept Spanish grandmas indoors in many villages. As the worst heat wave on record advanced through the continent’s west this summer, villages in France and the UK rushed to cancel public gatherings, street markets and festivals to protect citizens from deadly temperatures.

Mogadishu is the most important city in Somalia so alshabaab started their explosions and threatened from it.

Mogadishu

Reports from the Somali Presidency say that a series of operations have been launched at the residences of the national leaders after a security scare.  All the offices of the Prime Minister of Somalia, Hamse Abdi Barre, have been investigated by the ATMIS army of the Ugandan government, while the President's side has been checked, using dogs that sniff explosives and weapons.

The Prime Minister has ordered a search of all the offices in the Government Palace after a series of security warnings when they came out yesterday.  The workers were all suspended from entering the building early this morning on Monday, excluding all recording equipment such as laptops and mobile phones.  Since last Friday, there has been a sense of fear that Al Shabaab is trying to attack government buildings, according to security sources.

On Friday, the Martyr's Mosque in the Somali Presidency was also ransacked as a security incident took place.  President Hassan Sheikh has issued an order to ban the ID cards that can be used in Villa Somalia on the way forward, except for four offices that print IDs, namely: the offices of the President, the Prime Minister, the House of Representatives and the NISA command.

7 key areas where women entrepreneurs need specialised technology assistance for growth.

women

The pandemic has facilitated a lot of people to turn entrepreneurs, including women, who are already making their presence felt as successful and innovative disruptors. However, they are faced with double the challenges than their male counterparts. And while there is an increasing number of industry bodies, banks, NGOs, and women empowerment councils that are working towards enabling and encouraging women entrepreneurs, the help is generally limited to providing them better access to funding, networking, and mentorship for business skills. However, there is little support for women entrepreneurs when it comes to digital literacy and technology adoption.

Even as businesses and supporting infrastructure are increasingly adopting digitization, smaller entrepreneurs, especially women, continue to face challenges with technology. Be it from accessing banking services to adopting digital transformation services to enhance and optimize their business efficiency, women entrepreneurs face more challenges. The worst hit are women business owners in inner cities and rural areas who also must fight societal gender barriers. These women entrepreneurs need specialized tech assistance in areas like.

Specialized assistance in financial
technology like integration with payment gateways, app-based payments and links, cyber security, and data protection. Not many company owners have the good fortune to have a financier or investor for their enterprise. Some have to raise money on their own, use credit cards, or bootstrap their businesses. Women-owned firms rank among the most common enterprises that receive little funding. Due to cultural and gender prejudices, women are frequently rejected loans—many institutions prefer to support male-owned firms.

Farmaajo and Fahad Yasin want to start a new civil war by using al-shabaab.

Farmaajo

In recent times, the terrorist operations carried out by Al-Shabaab in Somalia have been increasing. The increase in their operations and attacks is a request from Fahad and Yassin, which shows that the current administration is not able to ensure the security and safety of the people and they want to be killed. Al-Shabaab carried out various bombings and planned killings during this period  Last night, there was an explosion at a hotel where al-Shabaab fighters were supported by Farmaajo and Fahad Yassin.

and also when he left using Alshabaab, the plot of cheese and his use of Alshabaab movement became public and obvious to everyone  What is the coincidence of the BFS board announcing that Farmaajo will be sworn in today as an honorary officer and an explosion at a Hayat hotel? who lives in Mogadishu, why didn't they attack the farmhouse they attacked poor people  It is a question that people should ask themselves whether there is cooperation between cheese and alshabab and that is why they are hiding in this chair because the cheese house does not show any fear while the hotel near the houses are occupied by politicians and they are not afraid while the cheese is normal.

and there is no army guarding his house  It is clear that the collaboration between al-Shabaab and Farmaajo is evident and after this explosion, the Farmaajo group wanted to scare the Somali people. The problem of this mafia group should be prevented. The Somali people are demanding that the security agencies fulfill their duties and arrest them this group so that the country can be peaceful

Marc Cucurella on life-changing Barcelona decision, Reece James admiration and his Chelsea dream.

Marc Cucurella

Marc Cucurella says leaving Barcelona to play regular first-team football was one of the best decisions of his life – and it's ultimately what set the Spaniard on the path to joining Chelsea this summer in a deal worth £62million.

During his formative years in Barcelona's academy – which he joined from Catalan rivals Espanyol at 13 years old – the defender earned comparisons to club legend Carles Puyol. His tenacity was valued, his commitment lauded. Throw in Cucurella's technical prowess and few could deny a career in the professional game awaited the youngster.

"I understood I needed to go one step down to play a lot of minutes and play well. I think it was a long time - maybe four or five years – I stayed at maybe not the biggest clubs. But in my mind, I always focused on playing, and maybe one day I would have the opportunity [to sign with a big club]."

A keeper that can’t use his feet and forward line lacking mobility – there is not a single element of this side that works.

football

it was less than a year ago that Manchester United won at West Ham to stretch their record unbeaten league run away from home to 29 games. What a happy, uncomplicated time that must seem for them now, in the wake of a seventh successive away defeat with a cumulative score of 2-21.

This is United’s worst away run since 1936. Was the performance in west London worse than the 5-0 defeat at Crystal Palace in 1972? It’s probably too early to be sure, but Saturday was haplessness at a volume that will resonate through the generations.

Which is not to say things were good last September. United had just lost away to Young Boys. They had not played well at Southampton or Wolves. The ease with which Villarreal had restricted them in the Europa League final was still fresh in the mind. Ole Gunnar Solskjær, though, was good at setting up his team to sit deep and play on the break – at least until Cristiano Ronaldo was signed

What's making this red supergiant's millennium?

james webb

Just like the mischievous Tim Burton character of the same name, the red supergiant star Betelgeuse's head shrank.

Scientists watched the star blast its outer surface into space in 2019, an unexpected cosmic event they had never seen before in a normal star. The eruption was so catastrophic, it blew off 400 billion times as much material as the sun does routinely in ejections linked to solar flares, according to the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.

What's more, the star got so dim, even backyard stargazers noticed. That left many people wondering if Betelgeuse [indeed pronounced "Beetlejuice"] was on the brink of an explosive stellar death.

It's not about to go supernova, experts say. But new observations from the Hubble Space Telescope are helping astronomers understand how red stars like Betelgeuse lose mass as they age — and what consequences follow such a significant eruption. Because the scale of the blowout was vastly greater than the plasma that occasionally spews from the sun's corona, scientists suspect what happened to Betelgeuse might be a different sort of phenomenon.

Illustrations by Henry Darger on display at Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art in Chicago.

Henry

The legal battle over the lucrative legacy of outsider artist Henry Darger has taken a new turn. A distant relative of the artist and the Estate of Henry Joseph Darger have filed a legal action against Darger’s former landlords, who have been the longtime stewards of the artist’s work. They are accused of copyright infringementamong a slew of other wrongdoing.

The suit alleges that Kiyoko Lerner and her late husband Nathan have for decades been illegally profiting from Darger’s art and writings, including his famed 15,000-page illustrated manuscript, “In the Realms of the Unreal,” despite no credible evidence of ownership.

In 1972, Darger, a retired Chicago custodian moved out of his rented one-bedroom apartment of 40 years to St. Augustine’s Home for the Aged. When the Lerners, his landlords, came to empty the room, they found hundreds of drawings, watercolors, and collages collected in haphazardly constructed albums. Darger died a year later at age 81. Shortly after his death, the Lerners began promoting and selling his work.

For nearly 40 years, the Lerners have claimed that Darger left the contents of his apartment to Nathan in a verbal agreement sometime in 1972; Nathan subsequently gave them to Kiyoko, they said. They also claimed that when Darger was preparing to move into the nursing home, they asked him if he would like to keep anything in his apartment. In their telling, Darger replied, “I have nothing I need in the room. It is all yours. You can throw everything away.” Their promotion of his work is credited with Darger’s posthumous celebration as a visionary outsider artist.

Fork me: ‘Fall’ movie removed more than 30 F-bombs with deepfake dub technology.

Fall movie

Without enough production budget for reshoots, the director of upcoming action-thriller Fall says the team turned to AI technology to remove over thirty F-bombs to turn its R-rating into a much more box office friendly PG-13, Variety reports.

The problem — which has now turned into a handy little marketing hook — apparently emerged when the indie film was picked up by Lionsgate for a cinematic release, where an R-rating (meaning children under the age of 17 cannot see the film without an adult present) would limit its box office potential when it releases in the US on August 12th.

“When we were filming the movie, we didn’t know if we were R or if we were PG-13, so I said the F-word so many times,” one of the film’s stars Virginia Gardner said. “I think [director Scott Mann] wanted to kill me in post when we were trying to get a PG-13 rating.” Thanks to machine learning, the final movie reportedly includes family-friendly lines like: “Now we’re now stuck on this stupid freaking tower in the middle of freaking nowhere.”

Insight on marketing products and solutions that put people first.

human

The rise of remote work emboldened employees to reconsider their relationship to work and start putting themselves first. We talked with Newsweek Expert Forum member — and longtime remote worker — Melissa Puls about the "human experience of work" and how putting people first should inform not just how you manage your team, but also your relationship with your clients and customers.

Two and a half years after the start of the pandemic, it's clear that hybrid and remote work are here to stay. Allowing employees to work from a location of their choice is now table stakes for companies looking to recruit and retain top talent. But facilitating this transition demands a high level of IT infrastructure, including unified end-point management of users, devices, applications, and locations, along with their necessary permissions and credentials.

The experience needs to be user-friendly and accessible but also secure and compliant, all while yielding actionable, data-driven insights.  This challenge — of delivering everything companies need to keep employees working happily and productively from any corner of the globe — is summed up in the mission statement that Melissa Puls, Senior VP and CMO of IT software company Ivanti, crafted for the company's early 2022 re-brand: "Make the Everywhere Workplace possible so people and organizations can thrive."

Al-Shabaab want to control Mogadishu.

Al-shabaab

Yesterday, artillery and mortars fell in Hararyale area of Warta-Nada district of Mogadishu, causing casualties and injuries.  Two of the artillery shells are said to have fallen at the Harareyale intersection, especially the Aljazeera hospital's emergency department, and it is said that one of the two shells hit him.

According to a local person, a woman died in a shell near her house while other people were injured.  The artillery was probably taken to the Presidential Villa Somalia which is located not far from there, while today Villa Hargeisa which is located in the Presidential Palace was holding a meeting of the People's Assembly to give confidence to the new government.

So this attack, which many people believe is behind Al-Shabaab, seems to be a warning message sent to the new government, after it received the confidence of the Parliament.

Al-Shabaab has a strong relation with Al-Qaida organization.

al-Shabaab

The Al-Shabaab group, which is affiliated with Al-Qaeda, has recently increased its operations in the countries of the Horn of Africa, especially Somalia and Ethiopia. Deadly and injured casualties were caused by two terrorist explosions last week in South West Somalia, and among the victims were prominent government officials.

Last night Al-Shabaab fighters launched a heavy attack on a base of Ugandan troops operating on behalf of AMISOM in Galwan area of the Lower Shabelle region.  On Tuesday in Mogadishu, two civilians were killed and others were injured in an explosion that targeted a military vehicle, just hours after the United States warned of al-Shabaab terrorist activities in Somalia and Ethiopia.  Also, two civilians were killed and others were injured in an explosion that targeted a vehicle carrying Somali government troops.  The explosion, which was caused by a mine buried on the side of the road, took place at the "Trapunka" intersection, where there are many pedestrians, especially in the Hodon district.

These attacks and many others took place in less than a month, which can be said to be a miracle that the Al-Shabaab movement did not happen before and the new government must take responsibility for this issue and resolve it.  A Somali expert explained that the attacks carried out by Al-Shabaab in Somalia are showing the new government that they still have the power to rule the country, as political changes have taken place in the country and a new phase has been entered.

Chelsea could offer two players in a bid to land La Liga midfielder

De jong

According to Sport (h/t Mirror), Chelsea could offer Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso in a bid to land Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong in the ongoing summer transfer window.

The Catalans are interested in two more of our defenders this summer, having already landed Andreas Christensen on a free transfer. The Blues are now trying to entice the Spanish giants by including the duo in a deal for the Dutch midfielder.

Azpilicueta and Alonso are both vying for an exit to Barcelona this summer. In exchange, the Stamford Bridge side are hoping to get the Catalans to consider a possible bid for De Jong. This could be a deal that might work out for all parties involved.

Alonso and Azpilicueta

Manchester United have been chasing the 25-year-old for a while now. The Red Devils are angling for a reunion between the former Ajax Amsterdam midfielder and Erik ten Hag but have so far met with little success.

But it seems De Jong isn’t keen on a switch to Manchester this summer. Chelsea, on the other hand, have been a competitive side over the years, winning the Champions League a couple of seasons back. We’re once again competing for the most significant European honour in the upcoming campaign, which United can’t boast.

Thomas Tuchel currently has a host of midfield options. N’golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Conor Gallagher and Billy Gilmour. It has the right mix of youth and experience but lacks dynamism.

But apart from the Frenchman and Croatian, none of the other players were convincing for the Blues last season. Gallagher had a good run with Crystal Palace and has returned to Stamford Bridge for the upcoming campaign.

Thus, we do need quality in the middle of the park. But it can’t come at the expense of an already depleted department in the squad. We’re in dire need of defenders and letting Azpilicueta and Alonso leave isn’t a wise option.

While De Jong has the talent to be a star at Chelsea, we need to pursue a deal that doesn’t see our team lose depth in other areas. Hopefully, we can find an appropriate solution to bring the Dutchman to Stamford Bridge this summer.
