Somalia’s Fight Against Al-Shabaab: Defiance, Sacrifice, and Hope

Somalia’s Fight Against Al-Shabaab: Defiance, Sacrifice, and Hope

Somalia’s Fight Against Al-Shabaab: Defiance, Sacrifice, and Hope

For more than a decade, the Somali people have endured the brutal campaign of terror waged by Al-Shabaab. From indiscriminate bombings to targeted assassinations, the group has tried to sow fear and halt Somalia’s march toward peace and progress. But today, the tide is turning.

Across the country, Somali security forces are intensifying their operations, pushing Al-Shabaab out of their hideouts, cutting off their supply lines, and dismantling their propaganda machine. Each victory—whether in a liberated village, a dismantled IED factory, or the capture of a terrorist commander—represents not only a military success but a symbol of national resilience.

What Al-Shabaab fears most is not the strength of the Somali army alone, but the unity of a nation that refuses to bow to extremism. Ordinary citizens are rising alongside their soldiers, providing intelligence, resisting intimidation, and showing the world that terrorism cannot destroy the spirit of Somalia.

The sacrifices are heavy, but the vision is clear: a Somalia free of terror, where children can go to school without fear, where markets are safe, and where the future belongs to builders, not destroyers. Al-Shabaab’s legacy will be one of failure, while Somalia’s legacy will be one of courage, victory, and hope.

Somalia Launches First-Ever National Climate Fund to Tackle Urgent Climate Challenges

Somalia has taken a historic step in the fight against climate change by launching its first National Climate Fund, a centralized mechanism that will help the country mobilize international financing for climate projects. This development comes as Somalia continues to face intensifying droughts, floods, and extreme weather events that threaten lives, livelihoods, and stability.

The fund became fully operational during a two-day workshop in Mogadishu (August 27–28), attended by over 60 senior government officials, private sector leaders, and civil society representatives. The workshop endorsed a roadmap and annual work plan, while also introducing the Somali Climate Finance Trial — a pilot initiative that will connect Somalia to major global climate financing streams such as the Green Climate Fund, the Adaptation Fund, and the Global Environment Facility.

Finance Minister Bihi Iman Egeh, chair of the fund’s board, emphasized that climate finance has become “a strategic priority” for Somalia.

“Mobilizing and managing climate finance through the National Climate Fund will not only enable us to respond more effectively to urgent challenges but also allow us to plan for a more resilient and sustainable future,” he stated.

The launch was co-chaired by Lt. Gen. Bashir Mohamed Jama, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, who underlined Somalia’s adoption of a “whole-of-government” approach to climate financing.

At the closing session, Liban Obsiye, executive director of the fund, highlighted the importance of partnerships:

“Access to climate finance is about meeting our immediate national needs but also about investing in long-term stability and protecting vulnerable communities from the worsening impacts of climate change.”

The National Climate Fund was established by a presidential decree under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Its governance structure includes key ministries, state institutions, private-sector stakeholders, and civil society groups recognized under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Officials believe this new mechanism will boost donor confidence, ensure transparent and accountable use of funds, and prioritize the needs of frontline communities. With this step, Somalia is positioning itself not just to survive the climate crisis but to build a resilient, sustainable future for its people.

Manchester United Humiliated by Fourth-Tier Grimsby Town in League Cup Exit

Manchester United Humiliated by Fourth-Tier Grimsby Town in League Cup Exit

Manchester United crashed out of the English League Cup in stunning fashion after losing to fourth-tier Grimsby Town in a marathon penalty shootout.

United trailed 2-0 at halftime but rescued a 2-2 draw thanks to late goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire. However, Grimsby held their nerve in the shootout, winning 12-11 after Mbeumo missed the decisive kick.

The defeat ranks among the most embarrassing in United’s history and leaves Ruben Amorim’s side winless in their first three matches of the season, following a disappointing 15th-place Premier League finish last year.

Grimsby’s Charles Vernam, who scored in the game, described the night as unforgettable: “It’s an amazing feeling, one that will live on forever.” Fans stormed the pitch in celebration after the upset at Blundell Park.

Remarkably, Grimsby fielded several academy graduates and a Faroe Islands international, while United’s attack featured £200m worth of new signings—Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko. Cunha also failed in the shootout, his weak penalty easily saved.

The shock result piles further pressure on Amorim, who has recorded only 16 wins from 44 matches since his appointment last November.

It also evoked memories of United’s 4-0 loss to third-tier MK Dons in the 2014 second round, the last time the club entered the competition this early due to missing out on European qualification.

Meanwhile, Brighton advanced with a 6-0 rout of Oxford, while Fulham and Everton also moved on with routine victories.

Puntland Security Forces Strike ISIS in Calmiskaad Mountains

Puntland Security Forces Strike ISIS in Calmiskaad Mountains

Puntland security forces have carried out a major operation against ISIS militants in the Calmiskaad mountains, marking another step in the region’s ongoing fight against terrorism.

According to regional officials, three ISIS fighters were killed and a cache of weapons was seized during the raid on Tuesday. The operation targeted militants who had been hiding between Maragaale and Kalidaad in the Togga Baallade area, where the group has tried to establish bases and corridors to launch attacks against Puntland forces.

This offensive followed the capture of the Idakacab well, north of Yucrin, which had served as a key hideout for extremists. The campaign is part of an intensive two-week effort combining ground offensives and airstrikes in the Baallade stream area, with support from U.S. AFRICOM forces.

Despite the successes, Puntland has also endured sacrifices. Military officials confirmed that more than 20 soldiers were killed and nearly 50 wounded in recent clashes around Calmiskaad.

ISIS-linked fighters have maintained a presence in Puntland’s rugged mountains for years, posing a persistent security challenge. But the determination of Puntland forces—backed by international partners—continues to weaken the group’s grip and prevent it from expanding its foothold in the region.

This operation highlights both the heavy costs and the critical importance of Puntland’s fight, not just for local stability, but for regional and international security.

Mogadishu Port Expansion: A New Era for Somalia’s Trade

Somalia has taken another major step toward economic growth and regional integration. The Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, Ahmed Mohamed Nur  , has officially inaugurated the new container terminal at Mogadishu Port.

With this expansion, the port’s capacity has increased from 150,000 to 250,000 TEUs annually, supported by the addition of modern cranes and reach stackers. At the same time, construction has begun on the new Port Headquarters, a priority under the Dan Qaran Government.

These developments represent more than just infrastructure improvements—they mark a transformation in how Somalia manages its trade. Modernized systems will ensure faster, more efficient services, generate greater government revenue, and strengthen Somalia’s role as a rising regional trade hub.

As Minister Ahmed Mohamed Nur emphasized, “Together, these projects modernize port management, improve efficiency, ensure timely service, boost government revenue, and position Somalia as a stronger regional trade hub, connecting our nation closer to the world.”

This achievement is not only a milestone for Somalia’s economy but also a symbol of national progress and resilience, positioning Mogadishu Port as a gateway that links Somalia more closely with global markets.

Somalia Delivers Justice: Execution of Al-Shabaab Militants Behind Deadly Attacks

On Monday, a Somali military court executed two convicted Al-Shabaab operatives in Mogadishu. The men, identified as Anas Abdulqadir Ali Mahmoud (“Salman”) and Aden Mursal Mohamed Iidow, were executed by firing squad after being found guilty of committing multiple acts of terrorism.

The court determined that the convicts had planned and carried out targeted assassinations of civilians and government officials, as well as bombings across the country. One of the most notable crimes linked to them was the devastating attack in Gaalkacyo, Puntland, which killed several respected community leaders, including elders and traditional figures.

Military prosecutors highlighted the men’s direct involvement in atrocities and intimidation campaigns against ordinary citizens. After reviewing substantial evidence and witness testimonies, the court issued the death sentence, which was executed without delay.

Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate, continues its insurgency against Somalia’s federal government, but this ruling demonstrates the government’s resolve to deliver justice and protect its people.

The executions mark another step in Somalia’s long and difficult struggle against terrorism—a clear signal that acts of violence and intimidation will not go unpunished.

ChatGPT: The Unrivaled AI Champion of the Middle East

ChatGPT: The Unrivaled AI Champion of the Middle East

ChatGPT: The Unrivaled AI Champion of the Middle East

According to a recent analysis, ChatGPT has emerged as the undisputed leader in the Middle East’s AI market. With more than 90% market share in countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE, ChatGPT is even outperforming its global average of 82%.

This dominance comes from OpenAI’s ability to integrate its technology across governments and private sectors, most notably through projects like the UAE’s Stargate initiative with G42, aimed at building advanced data centers.

However, regional competitors are beginning to rise. The UAE has launched Falcon, an open-source and free AI model, while Saudi Arabia is developing Humain, a chatbot designed to excel in Arabic language support. While these efforts are promising, they still have a long way to go before matching ChatGPT’s scale and adoption.

For now, ChatGPT remains the Middle East’s champion, but the coming years may bring stronger competition from locally built AI models tailored to the region’s culture and language.

Somalia’s Entry into the EAC: A New Economic Opportunity

Somalia’s Entry into the EAC: A New Economic Opportunity

Somalia’s Entry into the EAC: A New Economic Opportunity

Somalia’s recent admission into the East African Community (EAC) is more than a diplomatic move – it is a powerful economic opportunity. By joining a market of over 300 million people, Somalia is stepping into one of Africa’s largest trading blocs, opening doors for trade, jobs, and investment.

Youth make up over 70% of Somalia’s population, yet unemployment stands at around 67%, one of the highest in the world. With proper education, job creation, and regional labor mobility, Somali youth could play a transformative role in technology, entrepreneurship, and peace-building.

Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) are also vital for Somalia’s economy. In the absence of many formal jobs, SMEs provide income, support families, and drive innovation through mobile money, e-commerce, and agritech. With the right financial support, SMEs could become engines of growth, as seen in the European Union’s successful programs for small businesses.

Somalia’s inclusion in the EAC should therefore be seen as a chance to build a stronger economy – one that empowers youth, supports small businesses, and strengthens regional cooperation for a more prosperous future.

Somalia Executes Two Al-Shabaab Members Convicted of Murders in Mogadishu

Somalia Executes Two Al-Shabaab Members Convicted of Murders in Mogadishu

Somalia Executes Two Al-Shabaab Members Convicted of Murders in Mogadishu

Somalia’s military court on Wednesday carried out the execution of two al-Shabaab members convicted of killing government soldiers and a prominent businessman in Mogadishu.

The men, identified as Saleebaan Hussein Nur Ali (known as Ali Siyaaf) and Abdulqadir Abuukar Ahmed (also known as Nasruddin or Sabir), were executed by firing squad in the capital, according to military officials. The executions were conducted in the presence of military officers and relatives of the victims.

The court had previously found both men guilty of carrying out targeted assassinations on behalf of al-Shabaab, the al-Qaida-linked militant group that has waged a brutal insurgency in Somalia for the past 16 years. Their cases were heard separately, and both were handed death sentences for their involvement in the killings.

This is the third time in recent weeks that Somalia’s military court has executed convicted al-Shabaab members, reflecting a tougher stance as the government intensifies its campaign against the militants. Authorities have increasingly relied on capital punishment as part of their broader strategy to deter insurgent violence.

Al-Shabaab, despite losing ground to Somali security forces, local community militias, and African Union troops, continues to carry out deadly attacks targeting government officials, security forces, and civilians. The group’s persistent violence underscores the challenges facing Somalia as it works to restore stability and strengthen rule of law.

For many Somalis, the executions signal a measure of justice for victims of terrorism. Families of those killed by the two men witnessed the sentences being carried out, marking a symbolic moment of accountability.

As Somalia’s federal government and its allies step up military and judicial efforts against al-Shabaab, the executions also send a clear message: terrorism and those who carry it out will face the full weight of justice.

Somalia Steps Up Security and International Support Intensifies

Somalia Steps Up Security and International Support Intensifies

Somalia Steps Up Security and International Support Intensifies

Somalia has witnessed major developments in its fight against extremist groups in recent days. The elite Danab Commandos, with support from international partners, carried out a successful operation near Awdhegle in Lower Shabelle, killing over 100 al-Shabab fighters and destroying key strongholds. This victory marks a significant step in securing the region.

At the political level, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited Dhusamareb, the capital of Galmudug. His trip focused on launching infrastructure projects, preparing for regional elections, and strengthening military operations against al-Shabab. The visit also aimed to enhance cooperation between federal and regional forces.

Meanwhile, Somali government forces, together with local communities, launched a new mobilization in Middle Shabelle. The campaign seeks to expel al-Shabab from remaining strongholds and ensure long-term peace. Defense officials emphasized unity between citizens and the military as the key to success.

On the international front, the United States announced a reward of up to $10 million for information on ISIS-Somalia’s financial networks. Reports revealed that the group relies on extortion, ransom, arms trafficking, and even illicit fishing to fund its operations. The move reflects growing international concern about the group’s influence in the Horn of Africa.

Together, these efforts highlight Somalia’s determination, both nationally and with global partners, to restore security, defeat extremist groups, and build a more stable future.

Kenya Make History as Morocco Join Them in CHAN Quarterfinals

Co-hosts Kenya made a dream start to their African Nations Championship (CHAN) debut by advancing to the quarterfinals after a tense 1-0 victory over Zambia in Nairobi on Sunday.

Ryan Ogam was the hero of the night, scoring the decisive goal in the 75th minute to send the Harambee Stars to the top of Group A. The home side came into the match needing only to avoid defeat to secure their place in the knockouts, but Ogam’s strike ensured they finished the group in style.

Morocco also sealed their spot in the last eight after overcoming the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 3-1 in a high-stakes clash. Oussama Lamlioui opened the scoring for the North Africans early in the game, before Jephte Kitambala equalized for the DRC just before halftime.

The defending champions restored their lead when Mohamed Hrimat converted a penalty with 20 minutes left, and Lamlioui doubled his tally in the 80th minute to seal the win. Morocco, two-time champions, finished second in the group behind Kenya.

In the quarterfinals, Kenya will take on Madagascar, while Morocco face co-hosts Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on Friday.

Meanwhile in Europe, Japan international Ritsu Doan marked his Eintracht Frankfurt debut in style, scoring twice as the German Cup winners thrashed fifth-tier side Engers 5-0 in the first round of the competition. Doan’s goals came on either side of halftime, with Jean-Matteo Bahoya, Elye Wahi, and Paxten Aaronson also on target. Frankfurt’s victory underlined their attacking depth ahead of the new Bundesliga season.

Five-time German Cup winners Borussia Dortmund are set to play against neighbors Essen on Monday.

Somali National Army Eliminates Senior Al-Shabaab Commander in Bakool Region

On Sunday, Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF) achieved a significant victory in the ongoing fight against terrorism by eliminating a senior Al-Shabaab commander, Hussein Moallim Hassan, also known as Magaalabeen. The operation was conducted near Buurdhuuxunle, approximately 17 km north of Waajid in the Bakool region, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Defense.

Magaalabeen was one of Al-Shabaab’s most wanted leaders and had been a key figure in the group for more than 15 years. He played a central role in planning and executing deadly attacks across Somalia, including in the regions of Hiiraan, Middle and Lower Shabelle, Mudug, Galgaduud, Bay, Bakool, and Gedo.

Throughout his long involvement in the militant organization, he held multiple senior positions:

  • Operational commander in Bay, Bakool, and Gedo.

  • Head of taxation in Bakool.

  • Chief of intelligence in the Shabelle regions and Hiiraan.

  • Deputy to Fu’ad Mohamed Shangole, Al-Shabaab’s propaganda chief.

The Ministry of Defense declared that his elimination marks a major blow to Al-Shabaab’s leadership and operational structure. This achievement comes as government forces intensify counterterrorism operations in Southwest state, aimed at dismantling the group’s command network and restoring stability to affected communities.

The Somali National Army emphasized that this operation reflects the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to protect civilians, bring peace, and ensure the total defeat of terrorism across the nation.
