Somalia Introduces Emotional Learning in Classrooms to Heal a Generation

In a groundbreaking shift, Somalia is bringing emotional intelligence into the classroom for the first time. At Daryeel Academy in Dhusamareeb, six-year-olds sit in a circle not just to learn reading and math, but to understand their feelings. The pilot program, led by Galmudug’s Ministry of Education and UK-based nonprofit ThinkEqual, focuses on helping children manage emotions, develop empathy, and navigate social conflict.

The initiative responds to a national need: Somalia has suffered over 30 years of conflict, leaving deep psychological scars. Most children have little or no access to mental health support. By teaching them to express emotions and support one another, the program gives them the tools to cope and connect — key factors in long-term peacebuilding.

While there was initial resistance from parents, the impact on students has already begun to shift attitudes. As Minister of Education Mohamed Dhoore put it, “This is about healing a nation. If we want a peaceful Somalia, we must start by teaching our children how to cope with pain and build relationships.”
