Somalia Concludes 12th Grade National Exams with Major Education Reforms
Somalia has successfully concluded its 12th Grade National Examination for the 2024–2025 academic year, marking a major milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to modernize and reform its education sector.
According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Higher Education, a total of 39,382 students sat for the exams held between June 14 and 19 across the country. Officials described the process as credible and transparent, reflecting the growing capacity of Somalia’s national education system. Girls represented 42% of the candidates (16,356), while boys made up 58% (23,026).
The Banadir region recorded the highest student turnout with 23,674 participants, followed by Southwest (5,904), Galmudug (3,223), Hirshabelle (2,974), Jubaland (2,097), and Khatumo (1,520). A total of 140 certified centers were used for the exams, including 76 in regional states and 64 in Banadir.
To ensure a smooth and secure examination process, the ministry deployed 2,908 invigilators, 323 supervisors, and 1,777 security personnel. This year’s exams introduced several key reforms aimed at improving transparency and efficiency, such as QR code verification, digital attendance tracking, and on-site health services. The ministry also focused on reducing overcrowding through better student distribution.
In a notable development, agricultural students were included in the national exam for the first time, supporting efforts to expand academic diversity and strengthen Somalia’s agricultural sector.
Education Minister Farah Sheikh Abdulkadir praised students for their dedication and perseverance. He also commended teachers, parents, staff, and security forces for their roles in delivering a fair and effective national examination process. “This is a collective success,” he stated.
Though Somalia has faced decades of instability since the fall of the central government in 1991, education is increasingly seen as a key driver of national recovery. The Ministry pledged to sustain momentum in education reform and promised to announce the exam results and marking process through official channels in the near future.
