Barça Crowned La Liga Champions as Season Heats Up Across Spain
FC Barcelona clinched their 28th La Liga title on Thursday night, sealing the trophy with a decisive 2-0 win over city rivals Espanyol in the Barcelona derby. The long-anticipated confirmation came thanks to a commanding second-half performance and a bit of late drama.
While the first half offered balanced play, with Barcelona dominating possession and Espanyol crafting a few dangerous chances, it was rising star Lamine Yamal who made the breakthrough. In the 53rd minute, Yamal once again dazzled fans by cutting inside and curling a spectacular shot into the far corner, demonstrating why he's quickly becoming a fan favorite.
Espanyol's hopes were dashed when defender Leandro Cabrera was shown a red card 10 minutes from time after striking Yamal in the stomach. With one man down, Espanyol couldn’t recover. Fermin Lopez added a second goal deep in stoppage time to seal the victory and the league title.
Bilbao Secure Champions League Spot
In another significant match, Athletic Bilbao solidified their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League with a 2-0 win over Getafe. Second-half goals from Gorka Guruzeta and Dani Vivian ensured the Basque club stays three points clear of Villarreal in the race for fourth place. The game remained tense until Oihan Sancet entered as a substitute and added creative spark to Bilbao’s attack.
Getafe, meanwhile, is now staring at the threat of relegation after six consecutive losses.
Atletico Falters Again
Atletico Madrid continued their unpredictable form under Diego Simeone with a disappointing 2-0 loss to Osasuna. Alejandro Catena opened the scoring in the first half, and Ante Budimir, notching his 20th goal of the season, sealed the win late in the match. Atletico created multiple chances but failed to convert, a problem that has haunted them throughout the campaign.
Rayo and Betis Share Points in Vallecas
Elsewhere, Rayo Vallecano and Real Betis played to a dramatic 2-2 draw. Rayo went into halftime with a 2-0 lead after Javi de Frutos netted a thunderous free kick and Florian Lejeune added a second in injury time. However, Betis clawed back in the second half thanks to a Cucho Hernandez goal and a composed penalty from Isco, ensuring they finish the season in sixth.
