Local Heroes Rise Again: Ma’awisley Militia Strike a Blow Against Al-Shabab in Hiiraan

In the heart of central Somalia, local community fighters—known as the Ma’awisley militias—have once again demonstrated extraordinary courage and commitment in the fight against Al-Shabab. Launching a new offensive near the village of Mabaax, these civilian-led forces disrupted a fresh attempt by militants to regroup and relaunch attacks on local communities.

According to a militia commander, the fighters found and destroyed recently constructed hideouts, forcing Al-Shabab operatives to flee before carrying out their plans. “We destroyed the shelters the Khawarij had built in secret. They fled when we arrived,” the commander confirmed, referencing the extremist group using the government’s preferred term.

This operation is part of a larger, ongoing effort to secure the Hiiraan region, a long-contested area that has seen both progress and setbacks in Somalia’s broader campaign to eliminate terrorist influence. While government and allied forces have liberated significant territory, the persistence of rural insurgent cells proves the fight is far from over.

The village of Abooreey, once a symbol of security and recovery, is again under threat, highlighting the fragility of military gains and the constant need for vigilance. It also underscores the invaluable role of Ma’awisley fighters—ordinary citizens turned defenders—who are stepping in where formal forces often cannot.

But while their bravery is undeniable, experts warn that military action alone is not enough. Without sustained investment in local governance, reconciliation, and public services, Somalia risks falling into a pattern of short-term victories followed by prolonged unrest.

The resilience of Somalia’s people remains its greatest asset. The Ma’awisley are more than just a militia—they are a reflection of a nation's spirit refusing to surrender to terror.
