Somalia at a Breaking Point: The Toxic Legacy of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud
Somalia is not a private estate, and the Somali people are not subjects to a crown. Yet, as we approach the critical date of May 15, 2026, the administration of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud (HSM) is behaving as if the constitution is a mere suggestion and the national treasury is a family checking account.
The signs are clear, the corruption is loud, and the danger to our national security is unprecedented. Here is why the current regime is a threat to the very fabric of our nation.
The Death of Democracy: The May 15 Deadline
The constitutional mandate of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expires on May 15, 2026. Let this be a warning: Any attempt to extend this term is illegal, unconstitutional, and a direct provocation to the Somali people. In the absence of a broad political consensus, HSM is trying to manufacture a dictatorship. From Galmudug to Hirshabelle and the South West State, the federal government is bypassing the will of the people by imposing hand-picked, unwanted candidates. These aren't elections; they are political appointments designed to guarantee HSM’s grip on power.
A Family Business: Corruption in the Villa Somalia
Under HSM, "merit" has been deleted from the Somali dictionary, replaced by "nepotism." The administration has become a family enterprise:
Jihan Hassan Sheikh (Daughter): Appointed as Presidential Advisor for International Affairs.
Adam Roble (Son-in-law): Installed as Director of the Somali Development and Reconstruction Bank.
While ordinary Somalis struggle for a meal, the President’s inner circle is busy looting national resources, seizing private lands in Mogadishu, and selling them to the highest bidder. Experienced military and security leaders are being purged, replaced by clan loyalists whose only qualification is their blind allegiance to the President.
Weaponizing Security and Aiding Terror
The most unforgivable betrayal is the taming of our elite forces. International aid and military training intended to wipe out Al-Shabaab are being shamelessly diverted. Instead of fighting terrorists, these forces are being used as a personal militia to liquidate and intimidate political opponents.
The federal government’s deliberate marginalization of security forces in the South West State has plunged the region into chaos. By manufacturing crises in Puntland and Jubaland, HSM is effectively rolling out a red carpet for Al-Shabaab and ISIS to expand their influence. When the central government prioritizes fighting its own regional states over fighting terrorists, the nation is in grave peril.
Buying Loyalty with Blood Money
International donors must wake up. The financial support meant for Somalia's rebuilding is being used to buy the loyalties of clan elders and corrupt politicians. HSM is literally using the "peace dividend" to fund a campaign of division and instability.
The current crisis has paralyzed our institutions. We see a total collapse of communication between the Federal Government and the States, a doubling of conflicting authorities, and a presidency that thrives on chaos.
The Somali people will not be silent. We demand a clear, transparent electoral roadmap. We demand an end to the land grabbing and the nepotism. Most importantly, we demand that the constitution be respected.
May 15, 2026, is the end of the line. No extension. No excuses. No more corruption.
