Somalia at a Fatal Crossroads: The Authoritarian Descent of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud

The federal dream of Somalia is rapidly dissolving into a nightmare of centralized autocracy under the leadership of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Despite promising stability and reform, the current administration has systematically dismantled the nation’s democratic foundations. From the unilateral forcing of constitutional amendments to the blatant disregard for regional autonomy, the presidency has become a tool for personal empowerment rather than national service. Today, Somalia stands at a perilous junction where institutional integrity is sacrificed at the altar of one man’s ambition, leaving the aspirations of the Somali people for justice and development in the dust.

A primary pillar of this authoritarian shift is the blatant interference in regional elections. In states like Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and the South West, the Federal Government is no longer a facilitator of democracy but a puppeteer. By imposing unwanted candidates and transforming what should be transparent elections into mere political appointments, Mohamud is effectively disenfranchising millions. This systematic takeover is not just a breach of trust; it is a strategic move to ensure that local voices are silenced and replaced by loyalists who prioritize Villa Somalia’s directives over the welfare of their own constituents.

As the constitutional clock ticks toward May 15, 2026, a dark shadow of illegitimacy looms over the presidency. The legal mandate of Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is nearing its end, yet there is a disturbing absence of a clear electoral timeline. This deliberate ambiguity suggests a sinister intent to orchestrate a term extension, a move that would be both unconstitutional and a direct assault on the rule of law. With over 100 MPs already sounding the alarm on the parliament's expiring term in April 2026, any attempt to cling to power beyond these dates will undoubtedly plunge the nation into a constitutional vacuum and civil unrest.

Institutions Paralyzed, Resources Plundered, and a Democracy Under Siege

Perhaps most egregious is the weaponization of security forces and the state's financial resources. Elite units, trained by the international community to combat the existential threat of Al-Shabaab, are being redirected to intimidate political rivals and suppress regional dissent. This politicization of the military, coupled with the reported use of public funds to bribe parliamentarians for constitutional favors, reveals a regime that views the state treasury and the army as private assets. When a leader uses the bread of the poor to buy loyalty and the guns of the state to settle personal scores, he loses the moral right to lead.

The corruption within this administration extends far beyond the halls of parliament and into the very soil of the capital. In Mogadishu, a systematic campaign of land grabbing is underway, where citizens’ properties are confiscated and sold under the guise of state necessity, often benefiting the President’s inner circle and family members. These property disputes are not mere administrative errors; they represent a deep-seated culture of nepotism and graft where the state's influence is sold to the highest bidder. While the elite enriches itself, the average Somali citizen faces growing insecurity and the loss of their only livelihoods.

The fallout of these unilateral decisions is already visible in the total collapse of federal-regional relations. The South West State’s recent declaration to sever ties with the Federal Government is a testament to the failed communication and the aggressive "iron fist" policy of the center. This friction has led to a partial paralysis of state institutions, creating a dangerous duality of power and conflicting mandates that leave the public in a state of confusion. A government that cannot maintain a dialogue with its own federal members is a government that has failed its primary mission of national unity.

The time for accountability is now. The Somali people, supported by the international community, must demand an immediate and transparent electoral calendar for both regional and presidential polls. We must safeguard the rights of every citizen against discrimination and put an end to the exploitation of state institutions for family gain. Somalia’s future cannot be hijacked by a regime that prioritizes survival over sovereignty. We stand united against the erosion of our democracy and demand a return to a path of genuine federalism, security, and the rule of law before the damage becomes irreversible.
