Somalia Registers First National-Flagged Vessel in Decades
Somalia has officially registered its first vessel to fly the national flag since the collapse of the central government in 1991. The ship, named Guney, represents a major milestone in rebuilding the country’s maritime identity. This move signals Somalia’s return to the global shipping arena. It also reflects renewed efforts to strengthen national institutions.
The vessel was formally registered after completing all required legal and regulatory procedures. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Ports and Maritime Transport. Officials confirmed that the ship now meets international standards for flag state recognition. This achievement marks a turning point for Somalia’s maritime governance.
A Historic Step Toward Restoring Maritime Sovereignty
Ports and Maritime Transport Minister Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur described the registration as a significant breakthrough. He emphasized that it restores confidence in Somalia’s maritime system. The ceremony, held in Mogadishu, highlighted the importance of the moment. It symbolized Somalia’s gradual return to international maritime operations.
The development follows an agreement between the ministry and Somali Ship Register Limited. The memorandum of understanding was signed with Çağdaş Oykun Saltaş. This partnership aims to establish an official registry for Somali-flagged vessels. It will also streamline registration processes for shipowners.
The new registry is designed to ensure compliance with international maritime standards. It also aims to attract more vessels to operate under the Somali flag. Officials believe this will strengthen economic opportunities in the maritime sector. Somalia’s long coastline offers significant untapped potential.
For decades, Somalia’s maritime sector suffered due to instability, leading to piracy and illegal fishing. The registration of Guney marks a new chapter in reversing that trend. It is seen as a symbol of national recovery and resilience. Authorities are now encouraging shipowners to register under the Somali flag to support economic growth.
