Livestock Vessel Sinks Near Yemen, Raising Maritime Safety Concerns

A cargo vessel transporting hundreds of livestock has sunk off the southern coast of Yemen, triggering concern over the safety of its crew and renewed scrutiny of maritime livestock transport routes in the region. The incident occurred near the strategically vital Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world’s most heavily used shipping corridors.

The vessel had departed from the Port of Berbera and was reportedly heading toward markets in the Gulf region. Local sources indicated that the ship went down near Ras al-Ara in Lahj province. On board were approximately 400 sheep, 150 cattle, and seven crew members at the time of the accident.

Witnesses reported that the ship sank close to the shoreline, leaving many of the animals to drown while powerful waves swept others onto nearby beaches. Images widely circulated on social media showed fragments of a wooden vessel scattered along the coast, alongside livestock carcasses washed ashore by the tide.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement explaining the cause of the sinking or confirming the fate of the crew. Information regarding rescue efforts remains limited, though local reports suggest that attempts to gather details about survivors and recovery operations are ongoing.

The Bab al-Mandab Strait serves as a crucial maritime link between the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, making it a lifeline for international trade. It is particularly important for livestock exports from the Horn of Africa to Gulf and Middle Eastern markets, where demand for live animals remains consistently high.

The accident mirrors a similar maritime disaster that occurred along the same coastline last year, when another livestock vessel capsized. In that instance, local fishermen managed to rescue crew members and some animals. The Port of Berbera continues to serve as a key export hub for Somaliland’s livestock industry, a cornerstone of its economy. However, aging wooden cargo vessels, unpredictable weather conditions, and limited maritime safety enforcement continue to pose serious risks along these busy regional shipping routes.

  2. This is heartbreaking news. Maritime safety must improve urgently to protect crews, animals, and vital trade routes that many regional economies heavily depend on.
