Somalia Launches National Agriculture Coordination Platform

Somalia’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation has launched a national agriculture sector coordination platform in Mogadishu. The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders and improve food security nationwide. It comes at a critical time as the country faces ongoing drought and climate challenges. The platform is expected to streamline agricultural efforts across different sectors.

The new system will enhance coordination between government institutions, international partners and development agencies. By aligning programs, it seeks to reduce duplication and increase efficiency. Farmers across Somalia are expected to benefit from improved support and resources. Ultimately, the initiative aims to boost agricultural productivity.

The launch event was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Ahmed Jama and other senior officials. Representatives from Food and Agriculture Organization and World Food Programme also participated. Their involvement highlights the importance of international cooperation. The platform is seen as a key step toward coordinated development.

Deputy Prime Minister Jama emphasized the government’s commitment to food self-sufficiency. He stated that Somalia has a national plan to increase agricultural production. The platform will act as a catalyst for achieving long-term development goals. It is also expected to improve livelihoods for rural communities.

A Strategic Move to Boost Food Security and Sustainable Growth

Minister of Agriculture Mohamed Abdi Hayir Mareeye highlighted the sector’s importance. He noted that agriculture plays a central role in economic recovery and resilience. Over the past five years, Somalia has made progress in boosting output. These gains have contributed to better food security.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain significant. Climate variability, drought and limited infrastructure continue to affect farmers. However, the new coordination platform offers hope for more effective solutions. It represents a unified effort to strengthen Somalia’s agriculture sector and secure a sustainable future.
