Aya Olleh Adams: Somalia’s Youngest International Swimmer Making Waves

Ten-year-old Aya Olleh Adams has made history as the youngest swimmer ever to represent Somalia on the international stage. Competing at the Africa Aquatics Zone III Swimming Championships in Nairobi from October 16–19, Aya raced in nine events, covering freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and medley categories — coinciding with her 10th birthday.

Aya’s participation highlights Somalia’s growing presence in international aquatics, following 15-year-old Mustaf Islahom’s debut at the World Aquatics Championships earlier this year. Her journey reflects the Somali Aquatics Federation’s renewed efforts to develop youth talent abroad.

Based in Uganda, Aya trains at Aqua Akii in Kampala under Coach Abel Ddemulirra, with guidance from her mother, Mackenzie Adams, a former basketball and American football player. Recently, Aya was named Best Female Swimmer (10-and-under category) at the Uganda Aquatics National League and placed third at the national championships.

Aya’s story is not only about personal achievement but also national pride. Her mother emphasizes the importance of representing Somalia, inspiring other Somali children to pursue their sporting dreams. Aya herself dreams of qualifying for the Olympic Games, driven by a love for swimming and the inspiration of competitions she watched on television.

With persistence, dedication, and support from her family, Aya Olleh Adams is setting an example for Somali youth, showing that ambition, talent, and national pride can go hand in hand.
