After meetings they held in Growe, the state capital, in recent days, 28 senior clan sultans in Puntland state in northeastern Somalia demanded a return to the old electoral system of clans choosing their representatives in parliament and the representatives then electing the president of the state.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Sultans indicated that the presidential elections in Puntland cannot be postponed beyond their scheduled date of January 8, 2024, and they added that the short time remaining does not allow for holding “one person, one vote” elections, as called for by the state government.
A statement issued by the Presidency of Puntland responded to the call of the tribal sultans to return to the tribal system in the upcoming elections. The statement explained that the government had completed all requirements for holding popular elections.
