James Webb Space Telescope Sees Mars in a New Light.

James webb

We have a standard vision of what Mars looks like as a reddish, rocky planet, like in this Hubble image. The James Webb Space Telescope, however, sees the universe in infrared. Its first observations of Mars show how it'll be able to investigate the red planet in exciting new ways.

Mars in infrared

JWST is built to gaze deep into the universe, using infrared to penetrate dust and see objects that hide from other telescopes. But it's also useful for learning more about our planetary neighbors. On Sept. 5, Webb looked at Mars and gathered data with its Near-Infrared Camera, aka NIRCam.

Webb was able to see the side of Mars that was facing the telescope, called the observable disk. "As a result, Webb can capture images and spectra with the spectral resolution needed to study short-term phenomena like dust storms, weather patterns, seasonal changes, and, in a single observation, processes that occur at different times (daytime, sunset and nighttime) of a Martian day," said NASA in a statement Monday.

NASA released a graphic showing what Webb could see in two different wavelengths of infrared light. It brings home Webb's versatility and shows how shorter and longer infrared wavelengths can generate different sets of data. Here's a crash course in how Webb's infrared imaging works.

NASA is doing some experiments on neighboring planets in space

NASA

The last image from the "vending machine-sized" collider showed the surface of the asteroid Dimorphos seconds before impact The Double Asteroid Redirection Test  is the first-ever trial of a "planetary defence system".

If the orbit of an asteroid can be changed by an object sent into space, humanity may have a chance at protecting itself from the kind of disaster that did it for the dinosaurs.NASA and the international team of astronomers working with them chose their target carefully. To prove success, they needed an asteroid they can carefully monitor following the collision.

They also needed to make sure any impact wouldn't send a previously harmless piece of rock spiralling towards Earth They picked a pair of asteroids the 780 metre-wide Didymos, and its moon Dimorphos which is 160m wide - about the size of the Great Pyramid.

These Are the 50 Best Songs of 2022 (So Far, Anyway).

songs

You may not realize it, but life is measured in music. Think about it — songs are often tied to certain memories or moments you've experienced, be it from their lyrics or the exact date they hit music streamers. Some of the best songs of 2022 will paint a specific picture and call back to times you'll never forget, like when you and your besties couldn't stop playing "Sweetest Pie" by Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion during your spring break staycation.

Or maybe you just went through a breakup and felt personally victimized when you stumbled upon Omar Apollo's "Evergreen" on your TikTok For You Page (for the record, we've also experienced that exact phenomenon and you are not alone). Either way, you'll look back on all the ~mems~ you made this year with a unique lens thanks to the power of music.

Do we even need to explain? Everything about this song (and Bey's latest album, RENAISSANCE) is absolutely perfect. There's a reason Bad Bunny was the most streamed artist in the world for two years in a row, according to Spotify. This summer banger is enough proof.

Is The Era Of High Shine Skin Behind Us?

makeup

Like farmer’s market finds and Netflix shows, makeup is seasonal. And if spring touted the festival look, and summer skin was all about a “Glazed Donut” finish, then fall calls for a sophisticated upgrade that will usher in the cooler months (and warmer clothes).

It’s time to leave behind the punchy, fruity shades that popped next to sun-kissed skin in favor of more subtle tones with softer finishes. That’s where a softer, more matte look comes in for the new season.“Matte makeup is a good option for those with combination to oily skin who want more of a polished finish, whether it’s for everyday life, events or photographs,” explains Suzie Gerstein, celebrity makeup artist. “The good news is that many of the new matte formulas offer shine control without going ‘newscaster’ flat.”

Matte makeup does require a few more products to get it just right without looking super heavy or cakey compared to a highly dewy or glossy look, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth the effort. To create a perfect, clean slate for bold colors and velvety matte textures, Nicole Cudzilo, Vapour Beauty’s National Makeup Artist, says she actually opts out of an oil-free moisturizer for matte skin as it’s important to ensure that you skin is deeply moisturized (and some oil-free formulas offer a lighter dose of hydration) in order for your makeup to lay smooth.

A primer is also an important first step for matte makeup (although you can go without it if you’re really pressed for time) but if you choose to use a primer she has a trick to make the formula even more effective: “To avoid that dreaded cakey finish, consider dusting on a light coat of translucent powder after your primer but before foundation or concealer,” she says. “This will extend the longevity of any products you lay over top and will also combat shine.”

Hollywood sign to get a makeover as 100th birthday approaches.

Movies

In preparation for its 100th birthday next year, the Hollywood sign is getting a makeover. The giant letters on the hill are being cleaned and repainted, a process that’s estimated to take the next eight weeks.

Freshening up the 45ft-tall letters will require about 250 gallons of paints and primer, and anyone who wants to watch the paint dry can follow along on the sign’s 24/7 webcam. The Hollywood sign is a frequent target of creative adjustments, from the “incredibly tacky” official attempt to make the letters read “Rams House”, in honor of the Los Angeles team’s Super Bowl win this year, to periodic acts of vandalism that change the sign to “Hollyweed”.

But the last time the sign was repainted was a decade ago, in time for its 90th birthday. Sherwin-Williams, an American paint company headquartered in Ohio, is once again partnering with the Hollywood Sign Trust to repaint the sign in a special weather-resistant finish.

The paint company has selected “extra white” paint for the job, which it calls a Hollywood “facelift”. First erected in 1923, the sign on the ridge originally read “Hollywoodland”, a reference not to the film industry, but to the true engine of southern California’s economy: high-end real estate development. In classic Los Angeles fashion, the man who built the giant advertisement for his Hollywoodland development, Harry Chandler, also owned the Los Angeles Times.

Why Somalia’s drought and looming food crisis require an innovative response.

Somalia

NEW YORK CITY: Just a few months ago, Somalia was promised a new era. After a peaceful vote and an equally peaceful transfer of power, many had hoped that a line had been drawn under decades of clan divisions, factious politics, heightened tensions between Mogadishu and the regions, and a persistent extremist presence.

In recent years, Somalia recorded encouraging economic growth as well, lifting the hopes of the international community further. Until a perfect storm, consisting of the coronavirus pandemic, a locust infestation and floods, struck the country, rolling back the gains. A new president, whose election had crowned a period of hope that saw the drafting of a new provisional constitution, the establishment of a federal government, and the subsequent formation of five new federal member states, had promised to focus on national reconciliation and on further political and financial reforms.

James Swan, the UN special representative to Somalia, had told the Security Council that Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s presidency offered a “long-awaited opportunity to advance urgent national priorities.”

Adapting to change – building resilience to extreme weather.

weather

As the need to mobilise ever-greater resources to combat climate change grows, one inescapable fact looms large: even if global warming can be confined to just 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, companies, organizations and governments everywhere must develop strategies to protect communities and be resilient enough to resist extreme-weather events.

With wildfires near the Chinese city of Chongqing, heatwaves across Europe, floods in Pakistan and tornadoes in the US, adaptation to extreme-weather events will be a priority issue at November’s COP 27 climate meeting in Sharm El-Sheikh.

But what does climate adaptation mean in practice? And what role can insurers play in helping companies and organizations reduce risk and build resilience?  Last year, extreme-weather events cost the global economy $329bn. Meanwhile, during the 15 years to 2015, the global population at risk of flooding increased by 20-24 per cent.

The new government is working on a new plan to eliminate terrorism

el shabab movement

The Somali nation has gone through nearly 30 years of wars and civil strife which deprived it of the basic necessities of life and left it behind in the development and prosperity of its peers around the world After those terrible years of wars and conflicts.

the Somali people have turned to peace and reconciliation, as well as building a government capable of dealing with development and
prosperity law and various levels of management of basic services.

The emergence of terrorist organizations that resulted from young militias linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS prevented the realization of the desire for security, peace and development that people aspired to achieve and live in its shadow. The terrorist organizations that illegally shed innocent blood do not follow the true Islamic religion and humanitarian principles.

“We see a strong momentum against al-Shabab and want to sustain it to defeat a group that has proven to be remorseless and  mafia, which has attained economic autonomy through intimidation and the murder of innocent people” Mohamud said.

In a speech to the Somali diaspora community in the Washington area Friday he said his government is organizing a strong military front in the southern Jubaland state of Somalia. “There is ongoing preparation to liberate al-Shabab from middle-Juba region in southern Somalia.

4 Paint Colors Designers Would Never Use In Their Homes.

colors

A fresh coat of paint might be the oldest trick in the proverbial design book, but we are continually amazed by its lasting impact. Whether you want to spruce up your powder room or give your living room a transformative, floor-to-ceiling makeover, a new hue delivers time and time again. But, just because there's an entire rainbow of shades to choose from doesn't mean all pigments are in play. In fact, there are some colors that designers refuse to use in their projects.

So, what's the deal? Which colors have received the professionals' seals of disapproval? We tapped a few top designers to share their hot takes on the most controversial hues. Though these designers do not hold back on the colors that are banished from their repertoires, you'll see that their answers are not unanimous. (While some designers love warm, cheery colors, others prefer to keep them far away from their mood boards.)

That said, remember that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder—and paint colors are no exception. While we believe that your home's palette should reflect your lifestyle and personality, we hope these perspectives will help bring some clarity to your search.

Use This Site to Get a Deeper Look at Your Favorite Video Game Maps.

video games

Part of what makes video games so darn fun is the pure exploration. Us 90s gamers remember how huge Ocarina of Time’s Hyrule Field felt for the first time, or how realistic Grand Theft Auto III’s Liberty City seemed. While these games are still just as fun to explore today, modern tech makes it possible to take that exploration a major step forward, by allowing you to fly through the entire map on your own time.

Created by Jasper St. Pierre, the site, noclip, is unassuming at first. Once it loads, you’re greeted by an almost entirely blank screen, save for a list of 75 games in the top left, categorized by system. The list leans heavily Nintendo, with games such as Mario Kart Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and Super Mario Galaxy, but there are plenty of other games here, as well, including Half-Life, Portal, and Dark Souls.

When you click on a game, you’ll see any and all available levels and areas for you to choose from. Some games have a ton of options; others, not so much. Think open-world versus the rest: Some games have one big world to explore, while others have many different areas tied together.

Fitness Consumers Want Choices, Just Not Pelotons.

Fitness

conventional wisdom told us that gyms were dying because people would rather stay home and work out than risk exposure in a fitness facility. Now, the reverse seems true, with membership sales and attendance rising again at many in-person businesses, and those shiny workout-at-home companies struggling to provide more than expensive clothes hangers in spare bedrooms.

There’s no doubt the pandemic disrupted the fitness industry permanently. A third of brick-and-mortar fitness locations went out of business permanently. Consumers stayed home, some with online training and others with shiny new brands that became household names.

But the pandemic isn’t what it once was, and it looks like some of that disruption might result in some lasting changes, but not the way it seemed at first.

Fitness consumers are winning. They’re gaining more options, more flexibility, a return to pre-pandemic pricing, and – observers hope – greater awareness that lifestyle habits directly impact our ability to stay strong against health challenges, including strange, new diseases.

Climate change: Six tipping points ‘likely’ to be crossed.

Climate change

Crossing these thresholds would disrupt the Earth's systems triggering the collapse of ice sheets and the loss of coral reefs. Scientific commentators have previously said that reaching such a point would be a "climatic emergency".

The researchers analysed evidence for tipping points from 200 recent papers. They considered: At what temperature the tipping points would be reached What impacts there would be for Earth's other systems Over what timescales the impacts would be felt. The research, based on data published since 2008, found that at current levels of global heating the world is already at risk of triggering six dangerous climate tipping points, and risks increase with each tenth of a degree of warming. The Climate Action Tracker estimates that even under an optimistic scenario if current global climate targets are achieved, the world will see average warming of 1.8 C.

The idea of "climate tipping points" was first introduced by the UN's climate science group, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), two decades ago. If crossed they could spark a significant change in the way the Earth's systems operate, affecting oceans, weather and chemical processes, which could be "irreversible", according to the UN.

7 Different Types of Italian Pizza.

pizza

Pizza Napoletana :Born in Napoli, la pizza Napoletana is one of the most famous types of Italian pizza. Protected by a Traditional Specialty Guaranteed (TSG) certification, this style must be made in a very particular way. The dough is comprised of wheat flour, yeast, salt, and water and is left to rise for up to 24 hours. It's shaped by hand into a flat, round disk, about 3 millimeters thick. After that, it's topped with ingredients and baked for 90 seconds in a blisteringly hot (around 900°F) wood-burning oven. The result is a soft, elastic heart with a tall, fluffy crust called the cornicione in Italian. You can find this variety at your local Eataly's La Pizza & La Pasta restaurant.

Pizza alla Pala :Meaning "paddle pizza" in Italian, pizza alla pala originated in Roman bakeries as a way to use up leftover bread dough. Bakers would stretch the dough lengthwise, top it with fresh ingredients, and serve it by the slice on a wooden paddle. Unlike pizza Napoletana, this style has a highly-hydrated dough (about 80% water) and is cooked in an electric oven around 580°F. The dough is denser and rises for a long time, giving each slice a soft, fluffy interior and a crispy exterior. Get a slice at your local Eataly and try our recipe!

Pizza Tonda Romana Pizza alla pala isn't the only variety of pizza from Italy's capital city. In Roman pizzerie, you'll find another type: la pizza tonda Romana. This kind is flat and round and it has a very thin crust. Unlike pizza Napoletana, this style is crispy and has an almost cracker-like crust!

The Galgudud and Hiran governorates are making a great preparation for the huge war with alshabaab.

The Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Hamza Abdi Barre, yesterday chaired the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers, which discussed the strengthening of security plans, the acceleration of the drought emergency and the program of the debt relief process in Somalia.  The meeting heard reports from the Minister of Security, Internal Affairs and Finance. First of all, the Minister of Internal Security gave a report on the latest operations of the armed forces in terms of security and stabilization of the liberated areas. anti-peace.

The Prime Minister of Somalia, Hamze Abdi Berri, said that the liberation of Al-Shabaab from the regions and throughout the country is the first program of the government.  On the other hand, the Somali Council of Ministers praised the military campaign of the Somali communities fighting against Al-Shabaab and the support of the army, in order to save themselves and their wealth.   The cabinet's statement comes days after Al-Shabaab threatened to fight any tribe that joins the government's call to fight them.

Strong mobilization is underway in the regions of Galgaduud and Hiraan, which is intended to wage a united war against Al-Shabaab.  Al-Shabaab has recently committed a brutal massacre of civilians, killing dozens of civilians, including women and children, in Hiran region, and burning wells and villages.

McDonald's just threw technology out the window (well, its customers did).

McDonald's

Much of the tech world likes to wrap itself in a cloak of inevitability.Of course, Web3 will be a success. Everyone will want it. Because every VC and tech company will want everyone to want it. Sometimes, though, human life decides to twist in a different direction and tech luminaries lose a touch of their (self-administered) shine.

It seems like but a few short years ago that technology was taking food beneath its metallic wing and turning it into something very different .Plant-based was the thing, and who were you to argue?

Fast food brands raced to see who could make a success of the fake-meat Happy Meal or Whopper. With Beyond Meat, non-meat became a cool thing to eat. It wasn't necessarily healthier -- those things were still packed with calories -- but it would save the world from the ill effects of cow emissions.

Yet recently, a very odd occurrence tested the notion. It seems that McDonald's has very quietly sent its McPlant burger out to pasture.I did taste one of these things and found it entirely pleasant. You could, if you paired it with a glass of wine, persuade me that it was beef.

al-Shabaab

people in the two villages in territory Galgaduud are victims to what al-Shabaab were want and they now don't have any water or houses but the new government will help them in that hard situation . Local sources in Galgaduud region, central Somalia, reported that Al-Shabaab militants attacked two villages belonging to the town of "Bahdo" last night and burned houses inhabited by civilians.

The “Bahdo” administration confirmed the burning process, and that the houses that were burned are located in the village of “Bio Dais”, which is 15 km from “Bahdo”, and the village of “Mejaj Dub”, which is 18 km from the town  Eyewitnesses said that Al-Shabaab fighters who burned the houses returned to their positions while the residents of those houses were sleeping in the open.

The residents of the areas targeted by the Al-Shabaab movement had recently begun to arm themselves in preparation for the fight against the movement, which destroyed drinking water wells a few days ago and cut off communications from the “Adakabir” area in Galgadud province.

On the other hand, the Commander of the Somali Police Force, General Abdi Hassan Mohamed (Hijaar), who held a press conference, gave details of a serious operation carried out by the security forces yesterday morning in the Basra area, southwest of Mogadishu.  The commander said that Basra was targeted in a court that Al-Shabaab had in that area for a long time, and he also said that the area where the attack was carried out was taxing the businessmen of Mogadishu.

San Andres itself is a coral island, meaning it was geologically built by organic material derived from skeletons of corals and numerous other animals and plants associated with these colonial organisms. These types of islands are low land, being mostly only a few metres above sea level, surrounded by coconut palms and white coral sand beaches.

It is no coincidence that this Colombian island is a world-class scuba diving destination with crystal clear waters, and a tourist hub visited by over a million people each year.

But being so ‘in demand’ has a key downside: San Andres’ unique ecosystems and natural resources have been deeply impacted. This is something that biologist and professional diver Maria Fernanda Maya has witnessed first-hand.

“I have seen San Andres change in the past 20 years; the decrease of fish and coral cover has been quite high. Just like the rest of the world, we have experienced a very large demographic explosion, and the pressure on our resources is increasing,” she tells UN News.

Ms. Maya has been diving and working most of her life to protect the treasures of the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve. She is the director of Blue Indigo Foundation, a women-led community organization that works towards the sustainable development of the San Andres Archipelago, and the protection and restoration of its marine ecosystems.

Haaland or Salah? The big Fantasy Football dilemma.

football

The big question for Erling Haaland owners going into gameweek six is whether to captain him for Manchester City's trip to Aston Villa, with Champions League football back on the agenda next week.

The big question for non-Erling Haaland owners is whether to try to get him into your team straight away - but with the same factors to consider.

Will Pep Guardiola give his supreme centre-forward a rest before the game in Sevilla on Wednesday or will he start him again and see how much damage he can do in another hour or so of football?

As seasoned fantasy football managers well know, it is impossible to second-guess Guardiola's team selections. But for what it's worth, I am actually leaning towards giving the captain's armband to Liverpool's Mohamed Salah for the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park this weekend, even though he's not scored in his past two games.

It feels the safer bet with Guardiola having already warned us this season that Haaland won't start each game when the fixtures are coming every three or four days. However, Salah also looked the safer bet in gameweek five and got outscored by 14 points if you captained one instead of the other.

The power of mindfulness in your entrepreneurial journey.

Being a founder, not to mention a CEO, can be a very lonely place, carrying loads of stress and requiring constant peak performance. This often makes it hard to find a balance between one's professional and personal life. Maintaining strong relationships with the co-founders and investors is also not an easy task, where clarity and empathy are not always present. As one of my entrepreneurs says: “It’s not the technological challenge we deal with, it’s the mental one.”

“Throughout my +15 years as a professional, I've always been attracted to the intersection of business and psychology through entrepreneurship - What makes people tick? How do people think and act? And what motivates people in business? What drives me is being there for the amazing entrepreneurs, who are under constant pressure, so that they can make our world a better place. That’s what I’m here for, and this is my podcast – The Human Founder.”

At the age of almost thirty, Keren found herself in a tough spot. Not sure about her path, without a meaningful romantic relationship she aspired to have, having been rejected interview after interview for jobs she applied to. It was a pit she didn’t know how to get out of but a book that her father gave her helped change something within her.
