Somali Police Shut Down Illegal Abortion Center in Mogadishu
Somali police have successfully shut down an illegal abortion center in the Deyniile district of Mogadishu, where women were being forced to terminate their pregnancies under unlawful circumstances. Authorities arrested the man in charge of the facility along with several women working there.
The center reportedly charged women $400 per abortion, and shockingly, promoted its services openly online, including posters and a Facebook page. Somali Police Spokesman Abdifatah Adan described the discovery as “shocking and deeply concerning.”
The Somali National Health Professionals’ Council (NHPC) condemned the illegal operations, emphasizing that such practices violate medical and ethical standards. Dr. Cadow, Secretary-General of NHPC, stated, “It is our duty to act against such centers to protect public health.”
Investigations are ongoing to determine how long the facility had been operating and whether other individuals were involved. The suspects will face legal proceedings in court.
This operation highlights the importance of enforcing health regulations and protecting vulnerable women from illegal and unsafe medical practices in Somalia.
