Somalia Moves to Empower Its Grassroots Heroes — Macawiisley Forces to Be Reformed

Big moves are happening in Somalia’s fight against Al-Shabaab

Defense Minister Ahmed Macalin Fiqi just announced plans to reform and organize the Macawiisley forces — the brave local fighters who have been side by side with the Somali National Army.

These aren’t just ordinary militias. They are community defenders, and they’ve proven themselves in the toughest battles across southern and central Somalia. Minister Fiqi even compared them to the local forces in Iraq that played a key role in defeating ISIS and Al-Qaeda.

“We want to build a system for them,” he said, “just like Iraq did with their local forces.”

This reform is more than military strategy — it’s about recognition, support, and creating a unified force that understands the terrain, the people, and the stakes.

With this move, Somalia is showing the world that real change starts from the ground up — and that the path to lasting peace lies in empowering those who’ve already been fighting for it.

  1. This is truly inspiring! Seeing the Macawiisley forces receive the recognition and support they deserve is a significant step forward. These local heroes have been the backbone of community defense, and formalizing their role can only strengthen Somalia's path to lasting peace. Empowering those who know the terrain and the people best is a smart move. Kudos to the leadership for this initiative!
