Somalia and the U.S. Strengthen United Front Against Terrorism
In a powerful show of solidarity, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with U.S. AFRICOM Commander General Michael E. Langley in Mogadishu to accelerate joint efforts in the fight against terrorism. The meeting underscored the deepening strategic partnership between Somalia and the United States, especially in the face of renewed threats from Al-Shabaab and ISIS.
With Somalia pushing back hard against extremism, this high-level dialogue comes at a critical moment. Al-Shabaab has intensified attacks in southern and central regions, exploiting gaps left by the African Union’s transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM. But Somalia isn’t facing these challenges alone.
The two leaders discussed bolstering security collaboration, expanding intelligence sharing, and ramping up joint operations under the AUSSOM framework—a UN-authorized mission backed by regional peacekeepers and international partners.
President Mohamud praised the bravery of Somali forces on the front lines and thanked the United States for its continued air, logistical, and intelligence support. On April 17, a joint U.S.-Somali airstrike targeted Al-Shabaab militants in Adan Yabaal during an intense battle for control of a key town—showing just how active this alliance remains.
Meanwhile, Somalia’s Minister of Defence and top military commanders also held talks with U.S. officials to further align defense strategies.
As Somalia pushes forward, the resolve is clear: there will be no retreat. The country is determined to reclaim its future from terror and restore peace across every region. With continued international support and the unwavering courage of the Somali National Army, the tide is turning.
