The Ongoing Battle of the Somali National Army Against Terrorism: Victories That Shape the Nation’s Future

The Somali National Army (SNA) continues its decisive battle against terrorism, achieving daily victories that are reshaping the security landscape of Somalia. As the backbone of national defense, the SNA, alongside local defense forces, has successfully reclaimed strategic areas from the grip of Al-Shabaab, ISIS, and Al-Qaeda-affiliated groups.

Puntland Forces Deal a Major Blow to ISIS

In a recent operation, Puntland security forces uncovered a crucial ISIS stronghold near the Miraale River, close to Bosaso. The base, previously targeted by a U.S. airstrike earlier in the week, contained stockpiles of weapons, food supplies, and the bodies of ISIS militants.

Among the shocking discoveries, forces found 32 international passports believed to belong to ISIS fighters, along with drones and fortified bunkers that had previously hindered ground operations.

This successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of collaboration between Somali security forces and international partners, reinforcing the notion that terrorist groups are rapidly losing their safe havens.

SNA and Local Fighters Liberate Ali Gadud

In the Middle Shabelle region, the Somali army, in collaboration with local militias, has retaken the town of Ali Gadud after intense battles against Al-Shabaab militants. The terrorists attempted to hold their ground but suffered heavy losses as Somali forces continue their sweeping offensive to eliminate extremist elements.

This victory strengthens the growing partnership between the SNA and local defense units, reaffirming that the Somali people stand firmly behind their army in the fight against terrorism.

International Support Bolsters Somalia’s Military Capabilities

In a significant move to support counterterrorism efforts, Somalia recently received a shipment of military equipment from the African Union. The shipment included armored vehicles, protective gear, medical supplies, and fuel tankers—essential tools to empower the SNA in its ongoing war against terrorism.

Conclusion: A Nation United Against Terrorism

As terrorist groups face consecutive defeats on multiple fronts, Somali resilience stands strong. The collaboration between the army, local militias, and international partners has significantly weakened the operational capabilities of terrorist factions, bringing Somalia closer than ever to lasting stability and security.

The Somali National Army: Africa’s Shield Against Terrorism

The Somali National Army (SNA) continues to stand as Somalia’s first and strongest line of defense against terrorism, particularly in the battle against Al-Shabaab. Their relentless fight is not just for Somalia’s safety but for the security of Africa and the world.

A Battle for Stability

On Wednesday, the 9th Brigade Command of the SNA launched a fierce attack against Al-Shabaab militants in the Abagbeeday area, near Hudur district in the Bakool region. The operation led to heavy losses for the militants, with Somali forces successfully capturing weapons and military equipment.

This battle is part of a broader effort to dismantle terrorist networks across the country. Al-Shabaab, recently defeated in Middle Shabelle, is attempting to expand into South West State. However, Somali forces, supported by their government and people, remain vigilant in countering their every move.

The Government’s Unyielding Stand

Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has reaffirmed his commitment to eradicating Al-Shabaab, stating:

"The objective is not just to repel them but to wipe them out entirely. Somalia cannot develop as long as they hold even a small portion of our land."

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has personally stationed himself at the frontlines in Middle Shabelle, leading efforts to liberate territories. His presence has served as a major morale boost for troops, reinforcing the government’s unwavering resolve.

United Against Terror

The Somali people stand firmly behind their army. Across the country, citizens celebrate the army’s victories, recognizing the sacrifices made for a more secure and prosperous Somalia. With every operation, the SNA moves Somalia one step closer to lasting peace, proving that unity and resilience can overcome even the toughest of enemies.

Counterterrorism Efforts Intensify in Somalia with Targeted Airstrikes

In the ongoing fight against terrorism in Somalia, recent developments highlight significant progress in dismantling extremist strongholds. Late last night, a series of intense airstrikes targeted the Cal Miskad mountain range in Puntland’s Bari region, focusing on positions linked to the ISIS militant group. Reports confirm that the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) successfully struck a command center in Miraale, along with three other locations where militants were preparing to defend their base.

A Strategic Blow to ISIS

The primary objective of the operation was to neutralize key ISIS operatives entrenched in the mountainous terrain. By eliminating command structures and strategic locations, Somali and international forces are crippling the operational capabilities of terrorist groups. These strikes send a clear message: terrorist elements will find no refuge in Somalia.

The Role of Advanced Drone Warfare

The Somali military, with growing international support, has been increasing its use of advanced drone technology in counterterrorism operations. Recently, Akinci drones officially joined the fight against Al-Shabaab, another extremist group wreaking havoc in Somalia. These drones have conducted precision strikes in Hirshabelle, Galmudug, and South West state, targeting Al-Shabaab hideouts and disrupting their movements.

Strengthening Somalia’s Counterterrorism Efforts

The latest airstrikes are part of a broader strategy to eliminate extremist threats and secure the country’s stability. The Somali government, alongside international allies, continues to intensify military operations against ISIS and Al-Shabaab. With increased coordination and the deployment of advanced technology, Somalia’s security forces are making significant strides in reclaiming territories from terrorist control.

As the fight against extremism continues, these strategic victories mark crucial steps toward a more stable and secure Somalia. The momentum gained in recent months underscores the resilience of Somalia’s armed forces and their commitment to eradicating terrorism from the region.

The fight against terrorism in Somalia is gaining new momentum with the reactivation of Ahlu Sunna forces in the central regions. These forces, known for their past successes against Al-Shabaab, are now rejoining the battle to ensure a more secure and stable Somalia.

Sheikh Shakir recently confirmed that he and the top Somali military commander, General Odowaa Yusuf Rageh, have discussed this development. He welcomed the plan and emphasized that Somali politicians are also in support of this strategy. The government acknowledges the importance of utilizing Ahlu Sunna’s battlefield expertise in ongoing operations.

The Somali people continue to stand firmly behind their army, celebrating its victories against terrorist groups. The Somali National Army (SNA) remains the country’s first line of defense, working tirelessly to dismantle the networks of Al-Shabaab, ISIS, and Al-Qaeda.

Recent military campaigns have exposed the weaknesses of these terrorist groups, showcasing their mounting losses. Every day, Somali forces achieve new victories, which serve as a morale boost for both the soldiers and the citizens. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has also been visiting the frontlines to personally encourage the troops, demonstrating his commitment to eradicating terrorism.

With unity, resilience, and determination, Somalia is making remarkable progress. The reactivation of Ahlu Sunna forces, combined with the unwavering support of the people and leadership, will bring the nation closer to lasting peace and security.

Somalia deploys medical teams and aid to frontlines in anti-Al-Shabaab offensive

The Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) has sent medical teams, emergency response vehicles, and essential medical supplies to the Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions to assist local defense forces engaged in military operations against Al-Shabaab.

This deployment, which includes doctors, medicines, and ambulances, aims to deliver crucial medical assistance to injured local fighters and security personnel during the ongoing offensive against the militant group. The medical teams will be based at Adale District Hospital in Middle Shabelle and will offer vital services in Moqokori, Aden Yabaal, Haji Ali, Gulane, Masjid Ali Gadud, and other areas impacted by counterterrorism efforts.

Dr. Abdullahi Muse Ahmed, the director of SoDMA’s Health Department, supervised the operation from Mogadishu, highlighting that the initiative is designed to reduce battlefield casualties among local forces. The agency has also extended medical and humanitarian aid to conflict-affected areas.

Earlier this week, SoDMA provided medical aid to Jalalaqsi in Hiiraan, ensuring the supply of essential medicine for injured fighters and civilians in urgent need of treatment. Alongside medical support, the agency has been distributing food aid to communities affected by the conflict in Middle Shabelle as part of its broader humanitarian efforts.

With the support of community defense militias known as Ma'awisleey, the Somali government has intensified its military campaign against Al-Shabaab in central and southern regions, aiming to dismantle the group's strongholds and restore national security.

Al-Shabaab ambushes Somali President's convoy in Mogadishu, resulting in four deaths.

Militants from Al-Shabaab launched an attack on Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s convoy at El-Gab junction in Mogadishu on Tuesday while he was on his way to the airport for a visit to the frontlines in Middle Shabelle.

Two high-ranking government and military officials confirmed that President Mohamud was unharmed. Presidential adviser Zakariye Hussein reassured the public in a post on X, stating that the president was "safe and continuing his journey to the front lines."

The attack targeted one of the convoy's vehicles, resulting in the deaths of at least four people, including journalist Mohamed Abukar Dabashe, who was inside a nearby building that collapsed due to the explosion.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the assault in a statement on its Telegram channel, declaring, "Our fighters struck a convoy transporting Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as it departed the presidential palace en route to the airport."

Despite the incident, President Mohamud arrived hours later in Aden Yabaal district in Middle Shabelle, where he plans to stay for several days to oversee military operations against Al-Shabaab, receive updates from field commanders, and boost troop morale.

The UK embassy in Mogadishu strongly condemned the attack, labeling it a "cowardly" act.

"We denounce today’s cowardly attack on the President's convoy in Mogadishu. Our condolences go out to those who lost loved ones and the injured. The UK remains a steadfast ally of the Somali Government in its fight against the violent extremists responsible for this heinous act," the embassy stated.

The Somali National Army (SNA), in coordination with the U.S. military's Africa Command (AFRICOM), conducted an airstrike targeting Al-Shabaab militants in the Middle Shabelle region of Hirshabelle State.

According to an SNA statement on Sunday, the strike hit the Laba Garas area and targeted an Al-Shabaab operative who was attempting to regroup following the group's recent battlefield losses against Somali and allied local forces.

The SNA emphasized its ongoing collaboration with AFRICOM to weaken the militant group and assess its growing casualties. However, the statement did not disclose the number of militants killed in the latest operation.

The strike follows another recent operation in which at least 50 Al-Shabaab fighters, including a senior commander, were killed in airstrikes in the Damasha and Shabeelow areas of Middle Shabelle. Among the casualties was the group's leader responsible for its combat vehicles.

The Somali government, with support from international partners, has intensified its military campaign against Al-Shabaab, targeting the group's strongholds in central and southern Somalia.

Somali army forces repelled a heavy Al-Shabaab attack on Awdheegle district in the Lower Shabelle region on Saturday morning, killing several militants, local officials said.

Awdheegle District Commissioner Liibaan Abdulqadir said the Somali National Army (SNA) successfully defended the town, inflicting heavy losses on the militant group.

“The Khawarij attacked Awdheegle district, but our brave forces repelled them and inflicted significant casualties. I left the city while heavy fighting was ongoing. The situation is now calm, and our forces have strongly defended against the attack,” Abdulqadir said.

He added that the army prevented Al-Shabaab from seizing administrative centers in the district.

“Our national heroes have successfully defended Awdheegle, ensuring security and dealing the militants a severe defeat,” he said.

Saturday’s attack comes as the Somali National Army continues military operations against Al-Shabaab in the Lower Shabelle region.

Puntland forces kill senior ISIS drone commander in targeted operation

Puntland forces kill senior ISIS drone commander in targeted operation

Puntland security forces have killed a senior Islamic State (ISIS) commander responsible for directing drone attacks using explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), authorities announced Thursday.

The militant, identified as a foreign national, was killed in a Puntland-led operation in the Lugta-Huraanhur and Togga Raq-raq areas of the Al Miskaad mountains in the Bari region, according to a statement from the Hillaac Operation Command. Officials did not disclose whether additional ISIS fighters were eliminated in the operation but noted that Puntland forces had expanded their control in the area, prompting the militants to retreat.

The operation comes a day after Puntland forces recovered a fixed-wing drone suspected to have been used by ISIS militants in the same area. The UAV was discovered during counterterrorism operations targeting militant hideouts.

The use of explosive-laden drones has posed a persistent threat to Puntland security forces in their fight against ISIS, which has increasingly relied on this tactic for long-range attacks. The ISIS faction in Somalia was the first militant group in the country to deploy UAVs equipped with explosives, enabling precision strikes from a distance.

Puntland has been engaged in prolonged counterterrorism efforts against both ISIS and al-Shabab insurgents. Security forces have intensified operations to neutralize threats posed by these extremist factions, particularly in the rugged mountain terrain where militant groups have established strongholds.

Somali and AU forces end 15-hour siege at Hotel Cairo in Beledweyne after Al-Shabaab attack

Beledweyne (HOL) – Somali government forces, backed by African Union troops, successfully brought an end to a 15-hour siege at Hotel Cairo (Qahira) in Beledweyne. The attack, carried out by Al-Shabaab militants early Tuesday morning, began with a powerful car bomb explosion, leaving at least seven people dead, including traditional elders, military officers, and civilians. Several others sustained injuries.

The siege unfolded as government officials and clan elders gathered at the hotel to discuss an upcoming military offensive against Al-Shabaab in central Somalia. Beledweyne, situated approximately 335 kilometers (208 miles) north of Mogadishu, is a strategic city in the fight against the militant group, which continues to control rural areas and push for a strict interpretation of Islamic law. The targeted hotel has long been a center for key political discussions and security planning.

The attack started with a massive explosion, followed by heavily armed gunmen storming the hotel, sparking fierce clashes with Somali security forces. Witnesses reported hearing continuous gunfire and explosions as the militants engaged in a standoff with government troops. Parts of the hotel were severely damaged as security forces worked to neutralize the attackers.

Initial reports confirmed six casualties, though later updates indicated the toll may be higher. Among the victims were two well-known traditional elders. Federal lawmaker Dahir Amin Jesow stated that at least seven gunmen were involved in the assault, prompting authorities to deploy reinforcements to eliminate the remaining threat.

Al-Shabaab militants launch attack on a hotel in Beledweyne, Somalia.

Beledweyne (HOL) – On Tuesday morning, the Al-Shabaab terrorist group launched a violent attack on the Cairo Hotel in Beledweyne, Hiiraan region. The assault was preceded by multiple bomb explosions, followed by intense gunfire. Residents reported hearing loud blasts before heavy shooting erupted in the area.

The attackers used car bombs to breach the hotel’s perimeter before storming the building with gunfire. Witnesses said the explosions caused significant damage, sending people fleeing in panic. Security forces quickly responded to contain the situation and engage the assailants.

The hotel, situated in Beledweyne’s Howlwadaag neighborhood, was reportedly hosting traditional elders and military officers. These individuals were involved in efforts to organize security measures against Al-Shabaab in western Hiiraan. Their meeting was targeted amid ongoing operations to combat terrorist activities in the region.

At present, clashes between security forces and the attackers are still ongoing inside the hotel. Authorities have yet to confirm the number of casualties resulting from the assault. However, reports indicate that the confrontation has led to severe destruction in the area.

This attack comes just days after HirShabelle State President Ali Abdullahi Hussein Gudlawe visited the frontlines. He assessed the security situation in Qurac-Madobe, Warciise, and Aqab-Duca, where government troops have been fighting militant groups. The offensive against Al-Shabaab remains a key priority for the regional administration.

The Somali government has not yet released an official statement regarding the attack. Officials are expected to provide updates as the situation develops. Meanwhile, residents remain on high alert as security forces work to neutralize the threat.

Defense Minister warns against contact with Al-Shabaab amid ongoing military operations

Somali Defense Minister Abdikadir Mohamed Nur has urged the public to avoid any interaction with Al-Shabaab as military operations intensify in the Middle Shabelle region.

Speaking on Sunday, Nur said some individuals in the El Bacad area were still maintaining ties with the militant group, a sign that Al-Shabaab continues to exert influence in the region.

The minister emphasized that recent airstrikes targeted senior Al-Shabaab operatives while ensuring minimal risk to civilians. He reiterated his call for residents to distance themselves from the group and stay away from areas where the militants are active to avoid potential harm from counterterrorism operations.

The Somali Cabinet also recently advised the public to exercise caution and steer clear of Al-Shabaab strongholds, warning that ongoing military offensives could pose a danger to those nearby.

Since last month, the federal government, with support from international partners, has conducted air and ground operations in Middle Shabelle. According to government statements, nearly 200 Al-Shabaab fighters have been killed in the campaign

Somalia experiences internet disruption due to undersea cable break in the Red Sea.

map

Somalia experiences internet disruption due to undersea cable break in the Red Sea.

Internet services in Somalia and parts of East Africa faced disruptions after an undersea fibre-optic cable broke in the Red Sea, the National Communications Authority (NCA) announced on Sunday.

The issue stemmed from damage to the Pakistan & East Africa Connecting Europe (PEACE) Cable, a crucial infrastructure link connecting East Africa with Europe and Asia. This rupture resulted in slower internet speeds and reduced streaming quality across the affected regions.

To mitigate the impact, Somalia’s telecom providers redirected traffic through alternative networks, restoring services to near-normal levels, according to the NCA. However, full repairs on the damaged cable are expected to take until mid-April 2025.

The NCA reassured the public that it is actively coordinating with internet service providers (ISPs) to monitor service quality and address any technical issues that arise during the repair process.

Disruptions caused by undersea cable damage have become a recurring challenge in the region, with previous incidents in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean affecting connectivity. Experts stress that these outages expose the fragility of Africa’s internet infrastructure and emphasize the need for stronger redundancy measures.

The NCA has called on telecom operators to maintain open communication with regulators and implement rapid response strategies to minimize service disruptions in the future.

Poetry in Somalia:Using an age-old art form to build peace

Somali people

Poetry in Somalia:Using an age-old art form to build peace

Somalia, located in the easternmost part of Africa, is often known as the "Nation of Poets" or "Nation of Bards" due to its people's deep-rooted connection with poetry. This form of expression has been a fundamental part of Somali culture for as long as storytelling itself has existed. The earliest recorded Somali poetry dates back to the 18th century, with a reflective piece by Sheekh Cali Cabduraxmaan. This rich literary heritage continues to inspire a new wave of poets, particularly those who emerged just before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Somali Storytellers

The Somali Storytellers is a collective of young poets dedicated to engaging the Somali people, especially the youth, who will play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s future. Through their artistic expressions and performances, they seek to revive Somalia’s historical and cultural legacy while incorporating modern influences.

In support of this initiative, the UNDP established a Digital Storytelling Bootcamp, selecting 20 young Somalis and equipping them with the skills to share their narratives using available technology, such as smartphones and computers. Following their training, the participants embarked on a field trip to Mogadishu, where they had the opportunity to document and create stories in collaboration with their local community.

Zahra Abdihagi

Among the 400 candidates who applied, Zahra Abdihagi stood out. Despite the strong competition, her remarkable achievements as a writer and storyteller, along with her dedication to social change, earned her a place among the top applicants.

Zahra completed her high school education in Canada, and even before graduating, she had already published a book of short stories. Since returning to Somalia, she has received multiple accolades for her poetry, including securing third place in an international Somali-language poetry competition.

After completing the six-week digital storytelling training program, Zahra expanded her efforts by participating in additional creative workshops. She now helps train 30 young Somalis in the art of storytelling. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when isolation became widespread, she encouraged young people to use poetry as a means of self-expression and to spread messages promoting safety and awareness.

Digital Shelter

In 2020, Digital Shelter launched an initiative encouraging Somali women to share their personal experiences, leading to the creation of a storytelling and media-driven campaign known as the "Without Fear" project. On International Women’s Day in 2021, this initiative was officially introduced under the name "Cabsi La’aan – The Without Fear Project."

Zahra contributed to this campaign by writing a powerful story that gained traction across social media platforms, reaching thousands of Somali women. Her poem sheds light on the challenges faced by Somali women both online and within their communities. Cyber threats such as hacking, blackmail, and online harassment are common, but through poetry, women are finding a means to resist and raise awareness about these issues.

The Somali Storytellers are now working towards establishing their own company. Zahra expressed her optimism for the future, stating, "I see great potential for us. Many young people are already eager to learn how to become storytellers themselves." Their movement has gained significant support, with many people donating through their website to sustain their work.

The Future of Poetry in Somalia

A new generation of Somali storytellers is now stepping into the world of filmmaking. They recently showcased a digital storytelling project titled "Me and My Somalia," a collection that highlights the resilience, innovation, and challenges faced by Somali communities. Looking ahead, they envision a future where digital storytelling is widespread, Somali culture is authentically represented, and media plays a vital role in fostering positive community transformation.

WFP warns of escalating hunger crisis in Somalia due to drought and funding cuts

WFP warns of escalating hunger crisis in Somalia due to drought and funding cuts

The World Food Programme has warned that an additional one million people could face crisis levels of hunger in the coming months, as drought forecasts for the next crop cycle and significant funding cuts deepen the humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa.

The Director of the Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Service at the World Food Programme, Jean-Martin Bauer, explained that the number of people facing severe food insecurity in Somalia could rise from 3.4 million to 4.4 million people in the near future, putting millions of Somalis at risk of hunger.

According to the programme’s estimates, 1.7 million children under the age of five are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition by December 2025, with 466,000 of them suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

The WFP warning underscores the urgent need for urgent action to avoid further suffering and protect lives.

Currently, WFP is providing assistance to 820,000 people in Somalia, a significant decrease compared to the 2.2 million people assisted during the peak of the crisis in 2022.

Power noted that the situation could worsen if additional funding is not secured, as negative weather forecasts, reduced funding, rising food prices, and the ongoing conflict could contribute to a worsening humanitarian crisis.

In this context, the Somali government, in collaboration with international partners, is working to mitigate the impact of drought, improve food security and build resilience to future shocks.

Somalia’s opposition leaders back military offensive against Al-Shabaab and urge national security reform

Somalia’s opposition leaders back military offensive against Al-Shabaab and urge national security reform

In a joint statement issued Wednesday, the leaders commended the Somali National Army (SNA), regional paramilitary forces, and local militias for their efforts in combatting extremists across Middle Shabelle, Puntland, and Bari. However, they cautioned that Somalia's political divisions and inconsistent security policies have weakened counterterrorism efforts.

Former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, and opposition leader Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame have voiced their full support for Somalia's ongoing military campaign against Al-Shabaab and ISIS while urging a comprehensive strategic review to prevent militant groups from regaining ground.

"The prevention and eradication of terrorism is a national priority that can only be achieved through unity, national cohesion, and an inclusive political strategy. We call on the President to develop a clear and comprehensive national mobilization plan to eradicate terrorist threats from Somalia once and for all," the statement read.

The leaders' call for unity comes as Somalia intensifies military offensives against Al-Shabaab and ISIS, with major operations launched in recent months.

In November 2024, Puntland's security forces launched "Operation Hillaac," targeting ISIS strongholds in the Al Miskaad mountains. The offensive resulted in the capture of 250 square kilometres and 50 militant bases, marking a significant blow to ISIS in northern Somalia.

Meanwhile, the Somali National Army (SNA), with U.S. air support, recently carried out precision strikes against Al-Shabaab in Middle Shabelle. A February 25, 2025, U.S. airstrike near Al-Kowsar eliminated key militant operatives, according to U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).

Despite these operations, Al-Shabaab remains resilient, retreating into rural areas to regroup and launch asymmetrical attacks. Security analysts warn that military victories alone are insufficient without sustained governance and intelligence coordination.

While supporting the ongoing military campaign, the opposition leaders blamed President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's administration for prioritizing political disputes over national security, arguing that federal-regional tensions have weakened Somalia's counterterrorism efforts.

"We have repeatedly warned the President that political conflicts undermine the fight against terrorism. Instead of prioritizing security, his administration has engaged in political battles with federal member states, altered the constitutional framework, and created illegal electoral rules that have fueled instability," the statement continued.

The opposition leaders pointed to recent political instability, including the December 2024 clashes in Raskamboni between federal troops and Jubaland regional forces over a disputed local election. The incident underscored growing tensions between Mogadishu and regional administrations, raising concerns that internal divisions could provide Al-Shabaab with new opportunities to regain control over key territories.

Former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has also weighed in on the national security debate, echoing similar concerns about unity in the fight against Al-Shabaab and ISIS.

"It is our duty to stand with the brave Somali National Army, who are confronting the enemy on all fronts," Farmaajo said in a statement earlier this week, warning that militant groups exploit disunity to prolong instability.

The opposition figures demanded a reassessment of Somalia's counterterrorism strategy, calling for a national mobilization plan that integrates military, intelligence, and governance efforts.

"There must be no retreat from the ongoing battle against extremists. Urgent steps must be taken to address the factors that allowed terrorist groups to re-emerge in previously liberated areas," the statement emphasized.

As part of international efforts to bolster Somalia's counterterrorism operations, the United Nations Security Council approved the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) in December 2024. The new mission deploys up to 12,626 personnel to support Somalia's fight against Al-Shabaab.

The opposition leaders warned that without immediate political reforms, Somalia risks falling into a cycle of temporary military gains followed by militant resurgence. They urged President Mohamud to resolve internal disputes, strengthen security coordination, and restore national unity to ensure a more effective counterterrorism campaign.

"We urge the President to act as a neutral leader in guiding Somalia's security affairs and to work toward resolving the constitutional disputes that have divided the country. National unity is essential to defeating Al-Shabaab, and without it, our forces will remain vulnerable to setbacks," the statement concluded.
