Somali army repels Al-Shabaab attack in Awdheegle district in Lower Shabelle region
Somali army forces repelled a heavy Al-Shabaab attack on Awdheegle district in the Lower Shabelle region on Saturday morning, killing several militants, local officials said.
Awdheegle District Commissioner Liibaan Abdulqadir said the Somali National Army (SNA) successfully defended the town, inflicting heavy losses on the militant group.
“The Khawarij attacked Awdheegle district, but our brave forces repelled them and inflicted significant casualties. I left the city while heavy fighting was ongoing. The situation is now calm, and our forces have strongly defended against the attack,” Abdulqadir said.
He added that the army prevented Al-Shabaab from seizing administrative centers in the district.
“Our national heroes have successfully defended Awdheegle, ensuring security and dealing the militants a severe defeat,” he said.
Saturday’s attack comes as the Somali National Army continues military operations against Al-Shabaab in the Lower Shabelle region.
