The Somali federal government announced that its forces killed 1,650 Al-Shabaab fighters as a result of military operations in Galmudug and Hirshabelle states during the past two months.
A press statement issued by the Somali Ministry of Information stated that the operations resulted in the killing of 1,650 members of the movement, including 19 field commanders, and the wounding of more than 550 others.
The statement added that the forces, supported by local militants and international partners, destroyed militant strongholds, forcing many of them to surrender to the authorities.
It is noteworthy that government forces have intensified their attacks against Al-Shabaab militants linked to Al-Qaeda since last year, after Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared a comprehensive war on the terrorist group.
