Farmajo silences the mouths of everyone who speaks against him

Farmajo and the freedom of the press in Somalia .. Gagging voices ahead of the elections

Somali President Muhammad Abdullah Farmajo resorted to codifying methods of repression and confiscation of freedoms, after he approved the amended Somali press law on July 30 in secret, away from the press and human rights unions.

Farmajo's attempts to shackle the free press coincide before the elections due at the end of this year and early next year.

Farmajo signed the amended Somali press law for one reason, which is to escape the trap of exposing lies and media auctions that he pursued during the years of his rule, targeting the most prominent Somali media and political figures to undermine them to portray himself as the best fit for Somalia.

The Somali Press Law has gone through various stages in the past decade. The law was introduced in 2008, but it did not receive the attention of government institutions concerned with the matter, which caused an escalation of violence against journalists.

The press began to gain significant attention from Somali and international governmental institutions after the liberation of the Somali capital, Mogadishu, from the grip of the Al-Shabab terrorist militia in 2011, and violence against journalists and the press took another turn.
