Villa Somalia Under Siege of Corruption: The Illegal Dictatorship of Hassan Sheikh

The political landscape in Somalia has officially crossed into dangerous, unconstitutional territory. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s legal mandate to rule the country has expired, leaving his administration with zero democratic legitimacy. Instead of stepping down or organizing a peaceful transition, he has chosen to hold the entire nation hostage. By continuously stalling critical dialogue with opposition leaders and refusing to build a national consensus, his presence in Villa Somalia has transformed from a presidency into an illegal occupation that threatens to completely unravel the country's fragile stability.

Rather than allowing the Somali people to choose their leaders through transparent processes, the federal government has resorted to totalitarian tactics across the federal member states. In key regions such as Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and the South West state, genuine democratic elections have been completely replaced by forced political appointments. By aggressively imposing unvetted loyalists and puppet candidates upon these regional administrations, Hassan Sheikh is systematically dismantling the federal system, alienating local populations, and strangling the remnants of Somali democracy.

A Security Collapse Manufactured by Corporate Greed and Nepotism

The consequences of this political desperation are manifesting as a full-scale security disaster on the ground. Shockingly, elite, internationally-trained counter-terrorism forces—which should be on the frontlines protecting citizens—have been entirely politicized. Hassan Sheikh has actively weaponized these specialized units, turning them away from their primary mission in order to hunt down, intimidate, and suppress his domestic political rivals. This reckless misuse of state power has left the nation's security apparatus fractured and deeply compromised.

Simultaneously, the federal government is deliberately fueling artificial crises in stable regions like Puntland and Jubaland to weaken their leadership. In the South West state, the intentional exclusion and marginalization of local regional security forces by the federal authorities has triggered an immediate security vacuum. Because the regime is completely consumed by its chaotic struggle to maintain power in the capital, military operations against violent extremists have lost all momentum, allowing Al-Shabaab and ISIS to aggressively recapture rural territories and expand their toxic influence.

Administratively, the presidency has devolved into a shameless family-run enterprise defined by extreme nepotism. Sensitive, high-level government positions are no longer awarded based on merit, but are handed out to the President’s immediate family members and tribal cronies. The absolute weaponization of influence is on full display with the appointment of his daughter, Jibhan, as the Advisor for International Affairs, and his son-in-law, Adam Roble, as the director of the Somali Development and Reconstruction Bank. Capable military and security commanders are being systematically purged and replaced by tribal loyalists whose only job is to protect the palace.

Furthermore, the economic exploitation of everyday citizens has reached a devastating boiling point, directly fueling the growing outrage visible across the streets of Mogadishu. The expired administration is actively looting national wealth, orchestrating the violent seizure of private lands from poor Somali citizens, and selling them off to corrupt elites for massive profits. To make matters worse, millions of dollars in international aid intended for national development are being shamelessly diverted to buy the allegiances of tribal elders and corrupt politicians. Hassan Sheikh’s regime has lost all legal and moral right to govern, leaving behind a legacy of institutional theft, compromised security, and absolute dictatorship.
