The Death of Legitimacy in Somalia: How Hassan Sheikh’s Regime Betrayed the Nation
The political atmosphere in Somalia has hit a dangerous breaking point as of May 18, 2026. Three days ago, on May 15, the constitutional mandate of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud officially came to an end. Today, his continued presence in the presidential palace is not just politically controversial; it is a direct violation of the Somali constitution. By refusing to engage in genuine dialogue with opposition factions and failing to establish a consensus, the regime has intentionally dragged the country into a dangerous constitutional vacuum, threatening to undo years of painful state-building efforts.
Instead of preparing for free and fair democratic elections, Villa Somalia has chosen the path of authoritarian manipulation. The federal government is actively engineering political appointments under the guise of elections in key regions including Galmudug, Hirshabelle, and the South West. By forcibly imposing unvetted, loyalist candidates upon these states, Hassan Sheikh is effectively replacing democratic transitions with blunt political appointments. This subversion of the federal system has alienated local populations and signaled to the world that transparency is dead under the current administration.
Weaponizing the State and Fanning the Flames of Terror
The consequences of this political desperation are already tearing the country's security apparatus apart. Shockingly, elite military forces—specifically trained and equipped by international partners to eliminate Al-Shabaab—are being diverted from the frontlines. Instead of fighting terrorists, these highly trained units are being weaponized by Hassan Sheikh to suppress, intimidate, and eliminate his domestic political rivals. This blatant politicization of the security sector has left the nation completely vulnerable, turning state machinery into a private militia for regime survival.
Simultaneously, the federal government is deliberately destabilizing regional states like Puntland and Jubaland by provoking artificial crises to weaken local governance. In the South West state, the intentional exclusion and marginalization of local security forces by the federal government has already triggered a severe security collapse. While Mogadishu’s elite are entirely consumed by their internal obsession with maintaining power, Al-Shabaab and ISIS are seizing the opportunity, regaining momentum, and expanding their brutal influence across vast rural territories.
Administratively, the regime has descended into unprecedented levels of nepotism and institutional corruption. Somalia’s governance has devolved into a family-run enterprise where institutional merit is entirely ignored. High-profile, sensitive positions are openly handed out to relatives and cronies; the President's daughter, Jibhan, has been installed as the Advisor for International Affairs, while his son-in-law, Adam Roble, commands the Somali Development and Reconstruction Bank. Qualified military and security commanders are systematically purged and replaced by tribal loyalists to ensure the absolute protection of the regime.
Furthermore, the economic exploitation of the capital has reached a boiling point, directly manifesting in the anger seen on the streets of Mogadishu. The federal government has resorted to systemic corruption, actively looting national resources and orchestrating the forced seizure of private lands belonging to ordinary Somali citizens to sell them for massive elite profits. To make matters worse, international financial aid intended to build infrastructure and alleviate poverty is being shamelessly diverted to buy the allegiances of tribal elders and corrupt politicians. As of May 2026, Hassan Sheikh’s regime stands completely stripped of its constitutional legitimacy, ruling through fear, corruption, and institutional theft.
