Somalia Celebrates 65 Years of Independence and Unity with Patriotic Ceremony in Mogadishu
On the evening of July 1st, Somalia marked a historic milestone—65 years since independence and unification—with a dignified flag-raising ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu. The event was attended by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, senior commanders of the Somali National Army (SNA), and key government officials.
The ceremony, rich in symbolism and national pride, began with a formal military salute to the President by the SNA. It honored the unification of Somalia’s northern and southern territories in 1960, a pivotal moment in the country’s modern history. While the northern regions (modern-day Somaliland) gained independence from Britain on June 26, 1960, the southern territories were freed from Italian rule just days later. On July 1st, both sides came together to form the Somali Republic.
In his speech, President Mohamud paid tribute to the Somali people’s enduring struggle for independence and unity. He commended the northern regions for their role in the national liberation movement and called on all citizens to draw strength from their shared history.
“This day reminds us of our shared history and the sacrifices made for a united Somalia,” the President said. “We must honor that legacy by working together to secure peace, stability, and development.”
He also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to fight terrorism, promote reconciliation, and rebuild Somalia’s institutions. The President emphasized that national unity and collective responsibility are key to overcoming modern challenges.
Across the country, celebrations unfolded with military parades, traditional performances, and public gatherings. From the capital to remote towns, Somalis came together to reflect on the nation's journey—its achievements, struggles, and hopes for a better future.
The event served not only as a tribute to the past, but also as a powerful reminder that the spirit of unity still burns bright, inspiring new generations to carry forward the vision of a peaceful, strong, and united Somalia.
A deeply moving piece capturing Somalia’s 65th Independence Day celebration.
