Somali President Launches National Forum to Boost Unity and Reform

Mogadishu, Somalia — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud officially opened the National Consultation Forum on Monday in Mogadishu, marking a significant step toward strengthening national unity and addressing key political challenges in Somalia.

The forum brings together former presidents, federal and state leaders, respected Somali elders, and scholars to discuss vital issues such as completing the national Constitution, establishing a fair electoral process, countering terrorism, and advancing state-building efforts.

In his speech, President Mohamud highlighted his administration’s goal to move Somalia toward a direct electoral system, where citizens will be able to choose their leaders through a one-person, one-vote system. He made it clear that both the government and many opposition leaders agree on rejecting the old system of indirect voting, which has often led to political instability and lack of trust.

“This forum reflects our dedication to including all voices on the path to true statehood,” said the president. “We are committed to dialogue, and our door remains open for everyone to participate.”

While the president encouraged unity, some opposition groups—specifically the Somali Salvation Forum—chose not to attend. They released a statement listing the conditions needed for their participation, including the formation of a joint technical committee to guide the process and greater involvement from all federal states.

Despite this, many participants expressed strong support for the government’s vision and called for a peaceful and inclusive future for Somalia. President Mohamud also reminded attendees that while international partners continue to offer important assistance, the real responsibility for Somalia’s future lies in the hands of Somalis themselves.

The launch of the National Consultation Forum is seen as a hopeful sign that Somalia is working to overcome political divisions and build a stable and democratic state.
