Safiya Siciid Makes History as Sheffield’s 128th Lord Mayor
In a groundbreaking moment for representation and diversity in the UK, Safiya Siciid, a Labour Party councillor, has been appointed as the 128th Lord Mayor of Sheffield — becoming the first Black, hijab-wearing Somali woman to ever hold the title.
Safiya’s appointment was confirmed during a city council meeting held last Monday. Her story is a powerful symbol of belonging, resilience, and community leadership.
"It’s an honour to be the first Black, hijab-wearing woman to take this role. I came to Sheffield in 1985, and this city has truly become my home — a place where I’ve always felt I belonged," Safiya said in her acceptance speech.
A Voice for Every Silent Voice
During her speech, Safiya passionately expressed her desire to ensure that "every voice, no matter how quiet, is heard at the heart of this city." She envisions Sheffield as a thriving hub where investors, businesses, community leaders, and residents can collaborate, uplift each other, and proudly represent the soul of the city.
"I hope to make Sheffield a growing centre where people come together — sharing stories, amplifying its voice, and honourably representing its spirit," she added.
A Mother, a Leader, a Changemaker
Safiya is not just a political figure — she’s a single mother of five, a community advocate, and a symbol of grassroots leadership. She was first elected as a councillor for Burngreave in 2021, and has since become a powerful voice for inclusion and youth development.
She is also the founder of Reach Up Youth, a community-based initiative supporting young people, especially those from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds. Her work has been instrumental in providing mentorship, empowerment, and opportunity for young people across Sheffield.
Why Safiya's Story Matters
In a time when cities across the world are striving for equity and inclusion, Safiya Siciid’s appointment is more than symbolic — it’s a reminder that leadership can and should reflect the diversity of its people. Her journey from arriving in Sheffield as a young immigrant to becoming Lord Mayor shows what’s possible when communities embrace change and lift up new voices.
Safiya’s term promises to be filled with energy, compassion, and bold vision — and she’s just getting started.
Safiya Siciid’s historic appointment as Sheffield’s 128th Lord Mayor is a powerful milestone for representation and inclusion. As the first Black, hijab-wearing Somali woman in this role, she embodies resilience, community leadership, and the promise of a more diverse and united future for the city.
