Somali Army Crushes Al-Shabaab Assault, Killing 70 Militants
The Somali National Army (SNA), with support from local militia fighters, achieved a significant victory in the fight against Al-Shabaab in the Lower Shabelle region. On Monday, SNA forces successfully repelled a large-scale attack by the militant group in the Sabiib and Canole areas, killing at least 30 insurgents, according to government officials.
Decisive Response by Somali Forces
Sheikh Abukar Mohamed, the spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, stated that Somali forces had been on high alert and were fully prepared to counter the attack. "Our forces were well-prepared and responded decisively. We have the bodies of the militants killed in the two operations," he confirmed.
In addition to the ground battle, an airstrike in the same region targeted Al-Shabaab fighters, eliminating at least 40 more militants. The operation was reportedly coordinated with international partners, although the government did not disclose details regarding the foreign involvement.
A Renewed Offensive Against Al-Shabaab
These operations are part of a broader strategy by the Somali government to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s presence in its remaining strongholds. In recent weeks, military pressure has intensified, with a combination of ground operations and aerial bombardments aimed at weakening the militant group’s operational capacity.
Since the launch of the government’s offensive last year, Somali forces have made substantial territorial gains across Hirshabelle, Galmudug, and Lower Shabelle. Despite these successes, Al-Shabaab remains a persistent threat, carrying out guerrilla-style attacks in both rural and urban areas.
A Turning Point in the Battle Against Terrorism
The latest victory underscores the determination of the Somali government and its allies to eliminate Al-Shabaab’s influence. With continued military operations and strategic airstrikes, Somalia is making significant strides toward restoring peace and security in the region. However, the fight is far from over, and sustained efforts will be required to secure a lasting victory against extremism.
