Somali police have arrested Ali Adan Mumin, a political blogger and social media commentator known for his outspoken and often controversial remarks, accusing him of threatening national security and defaming government officials, authorities said Sunday.

Mumin was detained on March 1 by officers from the Hamarweyne District Police Command and will face charges in court, according to a police statement. Authorities allege he used Facebook and other online platforms to spread messages inciting public unrest and directly insult national leaders.

“The Somali Police Force, specifically the Xamarweyne Police Station, arrested suspect Ali Adan Mumin on March 1, 2025, on charges of threatening security and defaming the country’s leadership. He will be presented before the appropriate court,” the statement read.

Police also warned the public against activities that could disrupt security or spread false information, urging citizens to avoid content that could “destabilize the country.”

The detention has sparked backlash from several Somali lawmakers, who have called for Mumin’s immediate release, arguing that the arrest raises concerns about freedom of speech in Somalia.

Mursal M. Khaliif, a Member of the Federal Parliament who also serves on the Defense Committee, criticized the arrest, calling it a violation of democratic principles.

"The arbitrary arrest of independent journalists is a travesty to democracy! While I mostly disagree with this journalist, Mr. Ali Mumin, his constitutional right to free speech is worth defending because it’s the right thing to do."

Mumin, who worked as a journalist, has gained prominence in recent years for his social media commentary on Somali politics and security issues. His arrest comes amid growing scrutiny of government crackdowns on dissent, with critics accusing authorities of targeting journalists and commentators critical of state policies.

Human rights organizations have frequently raised concerns over Somalia’s press freedom climate, with the country ranking among the most dangerous places for journalists in Africa.
