Al-Shabaab launches attack on Somali military base.

Al-Shabaab fighters have attacked a Somali military base in the Speed area, near the town of Afgoye in Lower Shabelle region.

Reports indicate that heavy fighting began after the militants attacked a base of Somali forces that repelled the attack.

The reports, which lasted several hours, involved the use of all kinds of weapons, but official casualties in the fighting had not yet been confirmed.

Government officials in the area where the fighting took place said they had defended themselves against al-Shabaab, which carried out the attack and repelled them.

Meanwhile, a report by al-Shabaab said they had inflicted losses on troops stationed at the Sabid base and had broken up the fighting with them.

The situation is now tense, and government forces are now present in areas where the fighting has taken place.
