The European Union's anti-piracy force in Somalia said on Friday that a Spanish navy ship was sailing at full speed towards a commercial ship that may have been hijacked by pirates.
The force indicated in a statement that the Spanish ship Victory, the lead ship in UNAFOR's Atlanta operation, was rapidly advancing towards the ship that was said to have been hijacked by pirates, seeking more information and evaluating next actions.
If this operation is confirmed, it will be the first successful kidnapping involving Somali pirates since 2017, when a campaign launched by international naval forces stopped a series of kidnappings in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
