Somali maritime police intensify their patrols with increasing fears of the return of piracy in the Gulf of Aden

The Puntland State Maritime Police Forces of Somalia's Puntland State have intensified their patrols in the Red Sea following a failed ship hijacking attempt in the Gulf of Aden earlier this week.

The commander of the state's naval force, Abdullah Mohammed Ahmed, told the Associated Press that patrols in the waters had doubled and were rotating 24 hours a day to deter pirates.

On Sunday, the US Army announced in a statement the arrest of five men who attempted to hijack an Israeli tanker off the coast of Yemen.

The statement added that the pirates tried to escape using speedboats, but they surrendered after they were pursued by the American destroyer USS Mason.
