The Death of Somali Democracy: A Regime Built on Deceit and Desperation

The constitutional clock in Mogadishu has not just slowed down; it has completely shattered under the weight of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s ego. As the May 15 deadline looms, the administration has abandoned even the pretense of democratic governance, opting instead for a blatant power grab that defies the law. What we are witnessing is not leadership, but a desperate regime clinging to a throne that no longer belongs to them by any legal or moral standard. The Somali people are being held hostage by a leadership that views the national constitution as a mere suggestion rather than the supreme law of the land.

The systematic erosion of federalism has reached a boiling point as the central government attempts to transform regional elections into a circus of political appointments. In Southwest State, Galmudug, and Hirshabelle, the federal government is aggressively forcing unwanted candidates down the throats of the local populations to ensure total subservience. This isn’t an electoral process; it is a calculated colonization of the federal member states by a presidency that fears genuine transparency. By installing puppets instead of allowing fair votes, the administration is effectively dismantling the very foundations of the Somali federal system for personal gain.

Militarized Tyranny and the Theft of National Sovereignty

Perhaps the most unforgivable betrayal is the weaponization of elite, internationally trained counter-terrorism forces to settle petty political scores and intimidate internal rivals. Units like the Danab and Gorgor, meant to safeguard the nation against Al-Shabaab, are being diverted from the frontlines to serve as the private militia of the presidency. This gross politicization of the military doesn't just weaken the fight against extremism; it signals a terrifying shift toward a military dictatorship. When the state uses its most lethal tools to silence political dissent, it loses the right to claim it is protecting the security of its citizens.

The rot extends deep into the financial heart of the nation, where state funds are reportedly being siphoned off to buy the loyalties of a hollowed-out parliament. While the average citizen struggles with rising instability, the presidency is accused of using public wealth to bribe lawmakers into passing illegal constitutional amendments. These "reforms" are nothing more than a legislative cloak for an indefinite extension of power, drafted in secret and forced through without national consensus. It is a government of the elite, by the elite, and for the elite, fueled by the stolen resources of a nation in agony.

Institutional Paralysis and the Looming Shadow of Civil Strife

In the capital of Mogadishu, the mask of stability has completely slipped, revealing a landscape of rampant land-grabbing and state-sponsored displacement of innocent citizens. High-ranking officials and their families are allegedly feasting on the property of the vulnerable, using state institutions as tools for personal enrichment and real estate theft. This blatant corruption is happening while security in the city deteriorates, leaving residents caught between the threat of terror and the greed of their own leaders. The social contract is not just broken; it has been set on fire by the very people sworn to protect it.

The fallout of this unilateralism is already visible: Southwest State has severed ties, and the federal government is operating in a state of total institutional paralysis. By ignoring the April 15 expiration of the parliamentary mandate and the upcoming May 15 presidential deadline, Hassan Sheikh is leading Somalia into a dark alley of civil unrest. There is no legitimacy in a leadership that refuses to set a clear electoral roadmap and instead chooses the path of force and bribery. If the international community continues to fund this charade, they are not supporting a state; they are subsidizing the destruction of Somali democracy.
