Tragic Fire in Hargeisa Claims Lives of a Woman and Three Children
A devastating fire tore through a family home in Hargeisa early Monday, claiming the lives of a woman, her sister, and three young children. Authorities confirmed that the blaze erupted in the 26 June district, neighborhood 150, consuming the home within minutes.
The house, made of corrugated iron and situated close to other similar structures, allowed the fire to spread rapidly, leaving the victims with little chance to escape. The children who perished were girls aged 12, 7, and 5.
Fire officials in Hargeisa are investigating the cause of the incident. Although preliminary findings have not been released, the authorities confirmed that the Somaliland Police Criminal Investigation Department is examining the circumstances surrounding the fire.
The city’s fire chief warned that residential fires linked to electrical faults and unsafe housing conditions are on the rise. He urged residents to be vigilant, take preventive measures, and reduce hazards, particularly in homes with children.
“The increase in fires caused by electrical issues and unsafe environments is alarming,” the fire chief said. “We encourage families to stay alert and adopt safety practices to protect their homes and loved ones.”
In response, the Somaliland government has transferred $40,000 in emergency assistance to support the affected family. Officials also extended their condolences and prayers, asking God to grant patience and strength to the surviving relatives.
Deadly fires are not uncommon in Hargeisa, where many families live in informal housing with limited access to fire safety infrastructure. Last year, another tragic fire claimed the lives of several children after their father set fire to their home amid a family dispute.
This recent tragedy highlights the urgent need for better housing safety standards, increased public awareness, and stronger fire prevention measures to protect vulnerable families in Hargeisa.
