AU Forces Achieve Significant Gains Against Al-Shabaab in Lower Shabelle, Somalia
Mogadishu – The African Union (AU) forces have made notable progress against the militant group Al-Shabaab in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region, according to the AU commander, Lieutenant General Sam Kawuma. On Monday, he announced that the AU troops successfully ousted Al-Shabaab from several key towns, including Barire, Shabeel, and Aanole. This development marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to stabilize the region.
The announcement coincided with the reopening of the bridges in Shabeel and Aanole, which had been destroyed in June during attacks carried out by Al-Shabaab. General Kawuma emphasized that the reconstruction of these crucial infrastructures represents an important achievement in the first phase of the joint security operations. These bridges are vital for the movement of both civilians and security forces, and their restoration signals a return of stability to the affected areas.
General Kawuma expressed his gratitude to international partners, including the United States and Turkey, for their support during the military offensive. He highlighted that such collaboration played a critical role in the success of the operations, allowing the AU and Somali forces to execute coordinated strategies that reclaimed several territories previously under Al-Shabaab control.
The AU commander also praised the bravery and determination of both the Somali government forces and AU troops. He acknowledged the challenging conditions they faced during the campaign and commended their commitment to restoring security and order in the region. The joint efforts have not only disrupted Al-Shabaab’s operations but also reassured local communities of the authorities’ ability to protect them.
Looking ahead, General Kawuma urged Somali forces and AU troops to prepare for the next phase of operations. This stage aims to target remaining Al-Shabaab strongholds across the country, ensuring that the militant group cannot regroup or regain influence in the liberated areas. Strategic planning and continued international support are expected to play a key role in this ongoing mission.
The recent developments in Lower Shabelle demonstrate the potential effectiveness of collaborative security efforts in Somalia. While challenges remain, the gains achieved by AU and Somali forces highlight a positive trajectory towards peace and stability in regions long affected by militant violence. Local communities, benefiting from restored infrastructure and improved security, now have a foundation for rebuilding their lives and livelihoods.
As the operations continue, the international community will be closely watching the progress in Somalia, with hopes that sustained efforts and partnerships will eventually lead to a lasting defeat of Al-Shabaab and a more secure future for the Somali people.
