Puntland Security Forces Strike ISIS in Calmiskaad Mountains

Puntland security forces have carried out a major operation against ISIS militants in the Calmiskaad mountains, marking another step in the region’s ongoing fight against terrorism.

According to regional officials, three ISIS fighters were killed and a cache of weapons was seized during the raid on Tuesday. The operation targeted militants who had been hiding between Maragaale and Kalidaad in the Togga Baallade area, where the group has tried to establish bases and corridors to launch attacks against Puntland forces.

This offensive followed the capture of the Idakacab well, north of Yucrin, which had served as a key hideout for extremists. The campaign is part of an intensive two-week effort combining ground offensives and airstrikes in the Baallade stream area, with support from U.S. AFRICOM forces.

Despite the successes, Puntland has also endured sacrifices. Military officials confirmed that more than 20 soldiers were killed and nearly 50 wounded in recent clashes around Calmiskaad.

ISIS-linked fighters have maintained a presence in Puntland’s rugged mountains for years, posing a persistent security challenge. But the determination of Puntland forces—backed by international partners—continues to weaken the group’s grip and prevent it from expanding its foothold in the region.

This operation highlights both the heavy costs and the critical importance of Puntland’s fight, not just for local stability, but for regional and international security.
