Inside Somalia’s War on Terror: A Battle for Survival, Dignity, and Peace

On Wednesday morning in Mogadishu, the silence of the Jaalle Siyaad Military Academy was shattered by a suicide bomber—yet again. The attacker never reached his target. According to eyewitness and recruit Adan Hassan, the bomber was intercepted before causing major harm. "He blew himself up, causing minimal casualties," Hassan said.

This incident, claimed by Al-Shabaab, reflects a familiar pattern: targeting Somalia’s youth, its defenders, its future. The academy has faced such horrors before—in July 2023, a suicide bomber disguised as a soldier took the lives of at least 25 and injured more than 70.

But this time, things were different. This time, vigilance saved lives.

As Somalia intensifies its crackdown on terror cells across regions like Hiiraan and Lower Juba, the enemy grows more desperate. Al-Shabaab knows it’s losing. The Somali National Army, supported by local communities and international partners, is fighting smarter, coordinating better, and holding the line with resolve.

These aren’t just military victories—they are moral ones. They show the world that terrorism, no matter how violent, cannot crush a people who choose hope.

Somalia’s war is about survival, yes—but it’s also about dignity and reclaiming the future from the hands of those who trade in fear.

Let us honor the courage of Somali soldiers. Let us echo their bravery with our voices and our support.
Because when they fight for Mogadishu—they’re fighting for all of us.
