Somalia’s Turning Tide: Key Operations Cripple Extremist Power Across a Nationwide Offensive

Somalia is witnessing a defining moment in its battle against extremism. Over the past week, joint operations led by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), the Somali National Army (SNA), and international partners have yielded remarkable results. From targeted strikes in Hiiraan to fierce ground resistance in Puntland, the federal government is making strategic moves to reclaim territory and dismantle Al‑Shabaab and ISIS networks.

El-Hareeri Breakthrough

On June 6, a major joint operation in El‑Hareeri, Hiiraan region, struck a major blow against Al‑Shabaab. Over 40 militants were killed in a precision attack on one of their most significant hideouts. Vehicles used for transport, supply chains, and combat were destroyed in the operation. According to government sources, the mission disrupted their mobility and communications, crippling the group’s ability to operate in central Somalia.

Eliminating the Top Brass

Among the dead were two high-ranking members of Al‑Shabaab: Abuu Anas, who oversaw logistics for combat units, and Mohamed Ahmed (known as Xerow), a seasoned field commander. Two more senior figures—Nuur Cabdi Rooble (Nuunuule), responsible for operations in four major regions, and Commander Jeylaani—were seriously injured. These individuals were allegedly behind several recent suicide attacks in Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle, making their neutralization a critical victory for national security.

Precision Leadership Strike

The same operation confirmed the elimination of three additional top Al‑Shabaab officials:

  • Nuunuule, the overall commander for Hiiraan, Mudug, Middle Shabelle, and Galgaduud.

  • Caddaw, the intelligence head in Galgaduud.

  • Macallin Cumar, a trainer and ideological indoctrinator for new recruits.

This carefully coordinated air-ground assault not only removed tactical brains but also damaged the group’s ability to recruit, plan, and execute attacks.

Puntland’s Fierce Fight Against ISIS

Further north in Puntland, another front has opened up. Puntland security forces, supported by international air units, launched an aggressive offensive in Togga Baalade—a remote but strategic area near Bosaso. Though facing intense resistance, including landmines and booby traps, the forces pushed forward. The operation saw nearly 10 casualties among Puntland forces, making it one of the toughest encounters in recent months. Despite the challenges, the offensive continues with increased aerial surveillance and tactical airstrikes.

A Multi-Regional Strategy Backed by Unity

Somalia’s Minister of Defense, Ahmed Macalin Fiqi, confirmed that these operations are part of a broader national campaign. He emphasized the strategic partnership between federal forces and local militias, especially the Macawiisley in regions like Hiiraan, Hirshabelle, Jubbaland, and Southwest. Contrary to rumors, the minister clarified that local fighters are fully integrated, supported with medical care, weaponry, and logistical backup.

Looking Ahead: Challenges and Priorities

The path forward, while promising, is not without obstacles. The use of explosives and hidden traps demands specialized mine-clearing units. Sustaining air-ground coordination is essential for momentum. Beyond the battlefield, combating extremist ideologies through education and rebuilding trust with communities must become a national priority.
