Outrage in Las Anod: SSC-Khaatumo Police Arrest 23 in Brutal Gang Rape Case

The SSC-Khaatumo Police have arrested 23 suspects following a horrifying gang rape and torture incident that took place in Las Anod on the night of Friday, June 14, around 10:30 p.m. The attack, which targeted two young girls, has sent shockwaves through the community and sparked widespread condemnation online.

According to an official statement from the Police Command, the arrests were made within 48 hours of the crime through a rapid and coordinated operation. Authorities have confirmed that one suspect remains at large, with security forces actively working to apprehend him.

The SSC-Khaatumo Police reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on human rights violations, stating that every individual involved in this horrific crime will be brought to justice.

"There is no place for such acts in our society. We will not rest until all perpetrators are held accountable," the police statement read.

The incident has triggered public outrage across social media platforms, with calls for swift and transparent justice. Citizens and activists alike are demanding harsher penalties for sexual violence and greater protections for women and girls.

In response, police officials have urged the people of Las Anod and the broader SSC-Khaatumo region to maintain trust in law enforcement and to promptly report similar crimes. This, they said, is essential to preventing future abuses and ensuring fast, coordinated responses.

To further demonstrate their commitment to accountability and transparency, the Police Command pledged to soon release the names and photographs of the suspects, in an effort to build public trust and deter future crimes.

This case underscores the urgent need for stronger legal frameworks, survivor support systems, and sustained community cooperation in confronting gender-based violence in Somalia and beyond.
