Since 2007, soldiers of the African Union Mission in Somalia have been securing the presidential complex and other vital facilities, such as the Mogadishu International Port and airport, and handing over security of the presidency to the Somali security forces is considered part of the gradual withdrawal of African forces from the country.

The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and Head of the Union Mission in Somalia, Ambassador Mohamed El Amin Soueif, hailed this development as a crucial step in the country’s quest to achieve sustainable peace and security.

It is expected that ending the arms embargo that was imposed on Somalia will greatly enhance Somali military capabilities, which is vital for its ongoing struggle against Al-Shabaab militants and for it to take over the country’s security from African forces after 15 years.
