Djibouti Strengthens Somalia Peace Mission with New Troop Deployment

Djibouti is preparing to deploy a fresh military contingent to Somalia as part of the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Officials confirmed that the 13th “Hiil-Walaal” Brigade is scheduled to arrive on March 16, marking a routine rotation of forces supporting regional peace and security operations.

The incoming brigade will replace the 12th Brigade currently stationed in Somalia. The transition reflects the African Union’s structured rotation system aimed at maintaining operational effectiveness while ensuring sustained support for Somali stabilization efforts. The newly deployed forces are expected to take responsibility for key assignments immediately upon arrival.

A significant portion of the brigade’s mission will focus on maintaining stability in Hirshabelle State, an area where Djiboutian troops have maintained a consistent presence for years. Their role includes assisting Somali security forces, safeguarding strategic locations, and helping local authorities preserve order in recently recovered areas.

Leadership Oversight and Regional Security Role

Ahead of deployment, the Chief of the General Staff of the Djibouti Armed Forces, Zakaria Sheikh Ibrahim, conducted an inspection visit at the “Ali Cowni” military training camp in the Arta region. During his visit, he reviewed operational preparations and evaluated the readiness of both officers and enlisted personnel.

General Zakaria emphasized the importance of discipline, unity, and professionalism, reminding the soldiers that their mission extends beyond military objectives. He stressed that they serve as representatives of Djibouti’s national values and are key contributors to regional peacebuilding efforts aimed at supporting Somalia’s path toward long-term stability.

Djibouti remains one of the principal regional contributors to AUSSOM, the African Union mission that works alongside Somali forces to counter extremist threats posed by al‑Shabab. The mission also focuses on stabilizing liberated territories and strengthening local security institutions to prevent insurgent resurgence.

Over the years, Djiboutian troops have been stationed in several strategic towns, including Beledweyne, Jalalaqsi, and Bulo-Burde. In these locations, they have supported counterinsurgency campaigns, protected critical infrastructure, and assisted with civilian protection initiatives. The new deployment continues Djibouti’s long-standing commitment to regional cooperation and collective security in the Horn of Africa.
